Background:
Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) is a 501(c)(3) applied research institution located for 18 years in The Woodlands, Texas, (an environmentally planned community) 30 miles north of Houston.

The Policy and Economics Group of Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) applies a sustainability science framework that takes a place-based, regional approach, emphasizing social, institutional and cultural contexts. This requires the adaptation and innovative use of various analytical tools and methods, as well as the creation of new approaches.
The Policy and Economics Groups activities include: promoting institutional change, policy and practice for sustainability, developing and deploying indicators of human and ecosystem well-being, designing economic tools and incentives for resource conservation, and integrating rigorous natural and social science research into sustainability concepts.
Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- design and manage a range of research programs in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment;
- write white papers and proposals for submission to funding sources;
- identifies potential new funding sources;
- maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories;
- makes contributions to discipline through literature, conferences and/or field presentations;
- initiates contact and interfaces with various departments and groups for collaborative projects.
Education: PhD in Geography or Ecology with a sub-field in a social science.
Experience: Experience and training in developing research questions and projects that explore the link between ecology and society, particularly in stressed environments, including coastal regions, urban areas, and water-scarce locations; knowledge of quantitative methodologies and their application to ecosystem and/or social science research questions; demonstrated proficiency in writing successful research grants for foundations, government agencies and the National Science Foundation; familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) preferred.
