BirdLife International is a global Partnership of conservation organisations that strives to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources through global Partnership of over 100 countries.  BirdLife International Secretariat is the coordinating and servicing body of BirdLife International.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Regional Director for our African Division office based in Nairobi. The post will lead & coordinate the Secretariat's Africa Division's staff in supporting the regional network of 22 conservation organizations to deliver the agreed regional BirdLife programme. The post will appeal to a motivated, enthusiastic individual with considerable conservation, management, networking & fundraising success.

We are seeking a dynamic individual to lead and manage the BirdLife Africa Division and ensure its smooth running, adequate funding, delivery of planned work and effective support to the BirdLife Africa Partnership. The successful candidate will facilitate fundraising for the Partnership and promote joint initiatives and programmes as well as represent as appropriate, BirdLife International and the BirdLife Africa Partnership within Africa. The Regional Director will also be responsible for the coordination, management, implementation and monitoring of a current conservation project portfolio of more than 30 (mainly multi-country) conservation projects.

Qualifications: 

Minimum requirements for this position include Masters level education in an appropriate discipline; sympathy to, and experience in the NGO movement and sharing and understanding of BirdLife values, mission, strategy and way of working (through partners).  Excellent understanding of conservation, development and political issues in Africa and significant relevant experience at a senior level (guide 5 - 10 years) in international conservation and organisational management will also be required.

Reporting to the Chief Executive of BirdLife International based in Cambridge (UK), you will work closely with the Management Team of Global and Regional Directors.  Considerable travel within Africa will be necessary.

Compensation: Circa GBP 30-40k per annum + 12% Pension & Life Assurance cover

The successful candidate will be invited to attend the Regional Partnership meeting of the African BirdLife Partners in Kasane, Botswana 15-19 March 2010. Availability to attend would be highly desirable.
