Public Information Internship

RMI's Communications Department is seeking candidates for the Public Information internship. This is a one-year internship and starts in May or June of 2004.

The objectives of the Public Information Division of the Communications Department include: marketing RMI's products and services; soliciting and managing speech and conference opportunities; maintaining and further improving RMI's website (www.rmi.org); receiving and addressing inquiries to RMI via email, phone, and mail from the media, government, business, and the public; updating publications and presentation materials; expanding targeted outreach efforts to environmental groups; and expanding targeted outreach efforts to national and international print and broadcast journalists, which involves ghost-writing op-ed pieces, contributing to documentaries, and cultivating other media relationships. The Public Information Intern will work with RMIs Communications Department to coordinate proactive promotion of RMI's work and services around the world.

Responsibilities:
The intern reports primarily to the Communications Director. The work will include training and project teamwork with the entire Communications Department, and with our Research/Practice associates on various programmatic research and consulting areas.

The tasks of the public information intern position include: responding to inquiries from corporations, communities, and citizens about RMI's work; assisting the Communications Director in research, analysis, and execution of RMI's marketing and outreach efforts; working with other researchers and practitioners to get information to the Communications team; working with the remainder of the communications staff in getting out new publication material on the web and in hard copy; and working with our Media Relations Officer on cultivating the media.

The intern will receive on-the-job training and development, and if good at the job will come away with the basics of public relations work, including building and carrying out a PR plan, targeting the media, effective outreach management, analytical skills and tactics in market research, an introduction to the writing skill set and tools of the PR professional, and marketing experience in a non-profit environment. The position will provide the opportunity to learn about all aspects of RMI's work.

Qualifications:

• Minimum bachelor's degree in public relations, marketing, environmental sciences, and/or public relations/marketing experience;
  
• Strong interest in RMIs work and mission;
  
• Excellent writing and editing skills;
  
• Desire to learn the public information trade;
  
• Attention to detail is essential. Knowledge of foreign languages, particularly Mandarin or Portuguese, is a plus;
  
• Some computer experience required, familiarity with FileMaker Pro, Excel, and Word also helpful.

Benefits:
The Intern will receive a monthly stipend along with employee housing near the Institute and some meals provided. Living accommodations are provided for all interns in a group housing environment. Since RMI is a close-knit community, commitment to helping the group living situation to function smoothly is a prerequisite for all interns.
