The Wild Salmon Center is a $6M multi-national organization with a staff of 34. The Organization has operations in the Russian Far East, Kamchatka, the Olympic Peninsula, and on the Oregon North Coast, and on the John Day and Umpqua Rivers. The home office is located in Portland, Oregon in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center with satellite offices in Port Angeles, WA; and in Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia. 

The mission of the Wild Salmon Center is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. We devise and implement practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity. 

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Western Pacific Programs Director, the Project Manager is responsible for providing general project management and leadership for Wild Salmon Center initiatives on Kamchatka. This includes development and oversight of annual budget and workplan, participation in strategy development, helping to manage project staff and serving as a lead contact for US and Russian partners.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated project management skills and a strong understanding of Russian culture and the intricacies of working in the Russian Federation. S/he will also have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and to have strong project management skills. 

Responsibilities:

  • Together with Western Pacific Programs Director, develop and implement conservation strategies and annual workplan
  • Prepare and oversee annual budget
  • Maintain correspondence with US and Russian colleagues, partners and grant recipients
  • Participate in grant writing and fundraising activities
  • Prepare program updates for WSC Management and Board of Directors
  • Provide logistical planning, management and coordination of outside events such as local meetings, inter-organizational strategy sessions and regional workshops
  • Represent WSC at events in Russia and the United States 

Key Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in project management, including budget oversight
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field; Graduate degree preferred
  • Ability to develop strong and constructive relationships with regional NGOs, government agencies, scientists, and community and political leaders
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong Russian language skills, both written and verbal
  • Creativity and problem solving ability
  • Computer skills (Internet, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets and database)
  • Degree and/or relevant experience in conservation biology preferred but not required
  • Personal commitment to environmental and social justice
  • Ability to work in a team "Experience working cross-culturally
  • Sense of humor is essential! 

Travel:

The position is based in Portland, Oregon and may require travel in the US and to the Russian Federation. Frequent travel is required, including approximately 4 trips to Kamchatka annually.
