Ze-gen, Inc. is a Boston-based, privately held company providing advanced gasification technology to convert industrial and municipal waste streams into synthesis gas and low emissions thermal energy. Ze-gen has an initial commercial focus on gasification of construction & demolition debris, and has been proving the efficacy of waste gasification at our large-scale demonstration facility since September 2007.
The company is backed by top-tier venture capital firms both in Boston and San Francisco. Ze-gen is aggressively expanding its engineering team as we move into the design, financing and construction of full-scale commercial waste gasification facilities beginning in 2010.
Position Overview:
Project Engineers will make up Ze-gen's Project Engineering team and are expected to make a significant contribution to the overall project engineering execution of the Company. These individuals will develop and document the standard Liquid Metal Gasification (LMG) Process and related Projects with a clear and urgent market opportunity, and will report directly to Ze-gen's Vice President of Project Engineering.
The ideal candidate will range from the experienced project engineering Manager having defined, designed, constructed, and commissioned $20 to 40 million energy conversion projects, to the staff engineer with limited experience but an aptitude and interest in this type and size of renewable clean energy projects. They will be part of a motivated core group of project engineers which will execute Ze-gen's LMG projects with a variety of feedstocks and applications.
The candidates will have experience with delivering commercial energy projects on-time, following work processes, implementing project direction, and providing a project engineering team while interfacing with external engineering and construction resources. More specifically, the ideal senior candidates will have demonstrated success in small to midscale energy project development and managed the deployment and implementation of these projects, bringing those projects on-line, on schedule, and within budget.
Responsibilities:
- Prioritize and manage all aspects of the engineering and construction of the first commercial LMG facility and subsequent facilities. This includes supervision of engineering partners and interfacing with all outside resources in material preparation, gasification, gas clean-up, combustion, and conversion equipment aspects of the project.
- Oversee the existing development engineering approaches to ensure a successful demonstration of Ze-gen's first commercial project. Performance should be predictable, reliable and on-time.
- Provide Ze-gen's Project Engineering Team (being assembled) with expertise across combustion, gas cleanup, steam plants, electrical, control, mechanical and other related areas
- Participate in capital estimating, project planning and full participation as a member of the company's technical executive team.
- Set technical requirements, standard specifications, prepare preliminary cost estimates and provide direction for new projects in conjunction with Ze-gen's Technology and Market Development groups.
- Work closely with Ze-gen's Plant Operations group to commission facilities, hand-off ongoing operations, and support continuous improvement to plant quality, technology and operating processes including onsite roles.
Qualifications:
- BS or related degree required, Mechanical preferred with emphasis on steam plant and small scale power generation
- 5-15 years experience in project engineering process & project management, including supervision of project development, commissioning and operations
- Recent Engineering experience in a related industrial or engineering company
- Ideal Industry Experience: power engineering firm, coal, biomass or small scale power generation company
- Career path that includes both process roles at large, established companies and independent power desirable
- Ideal experience also includes the project engineering of power or steam generation facilities including new technologies
- Career progression from accomplished individual contributor to senior level

- Team Development. Participates as a cohesive project team focused on a common set of goals. Plans and optimizes/leverages resources. Works within a team to develop comprehensive project development plans and achieve commitment to those plans. Must be an effective communicator and writer. Experience within remote engineering teams, or distributed development/engineering activities.
- Technical Depth. Displays both breadth and depth of technical knowledge in thermal plant engineering. Is a credible project resource among external partners, regulators, and current and future clients.
- Market Awareness, Curiosity and Open-mindedness. Will become, familiar with the latest technical developments in the renewable energy, gasification, gas clean-up, emissions and waste disposal space. Grounds all project work in market and technical reality. Must be responsive to Ze-gen's defined marketplace and customer requirements and feedback, and must understand the commercial and cost issues associated with delivering Ze-gen's LMG technology to market. Must be willing to adapt and implement project strategies in the face of compelling technical or commercial reasons to do so.
