Description

Background:


The Sustainable Campuses project is currently one of SYCs main focus areas. The project seeks to inspire, inform, train, and support Canadian students in the pursuit of social and environmental change through their campus. The projects main focus is to support students in the development and implementation of sustainable policies and Environmental Management Systems (EMS) for their educational institutions. The Sustainable Campuses project aims to promote a systematic approach to change in campus practices. It promotes students efforts to work within the systems of their educational institutions in order to create permanent, institutionalized mechanisms to ensure sustainability.


Duties:


The sustainable campuses project will be launching an exciting and challenging new component within our sustainable campuses program. The project coordinator is responsible for overseeing this project implementation. This three-year project intends to engage in a nation wide program aimed at promoting sustainable consumption on campus environments across the country. We propose to do this by:

  1. Linking the social justice and environmental aspects of consumption to develop a holistic approach that addresses overarching structural problems and facilitates institutional as well as lifestyle change.
  2. Development of a Sustainable Campuses tool kit and resources for student groups on how they can reduce consumption on their campuses. By using the Indicators Framework, the resource will focus on measuring consumption practices on campuses while concurrently providing success stories, campaign ideas and projects for change.
  3. Training students to measure campus consumption using the SYC developed Indicator Framework for Measuring Sustainability on Canadian Campuses.
  4. An enhanced communication network to divulge resources and information. This will assist SYC to become both Regionally and Nationally Present in order to provide an organized means for youth to strengthen relationships, communicate and outreach to each other within and across regions.


Responsibilities:

  1. Project Management
  2. Resource and Materials Development
  3. Fundraising for project costs and resources
  4. Outreach to participants within and outside the current Sustainable Campuses Network
  5. Assist with the organisation of speakers and workshops for the 5th annual conference
  6. Hiring of project staff and volunteers
  7. Chair committee meetings
  8. Report regularly to National Coordinator and the Excomm
  9. Support the National Coordinator through office maintenance tasks
  10. Communications website development and updating, developing newsletters and other project communications
  11. Management of project budget


Qualifications:

  • BA or BSC in Environmental Studies or a similar program
  • possess knowledge of campus sustainability initiatives
  • bilingual (french/english)
  • fundraising experience
  • strong writing and research skills
  • ability work in flexible work environment
  • strong ability to multi-task
  • knowledge of website development
  • experience managing budget or working with finances
  • understanding of the youth environmental movement
  • strong organizational and project coordination skills
  • experience with management of staff, interns, and volunteers
  • past involvement with the Sierra Youth Coalition
