Description

~ Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) operates a global fisheries certification and eco-labelling programme. We celebrate, promote and add value to sustainable fisheries and through the leadership of our partners, create market incentives to encourage other fisheries to improve the way they fish the oceans. ~

Over 300 fisheries around the world, landing 12% of the annual global harvest, are now engaged at some stage of the MSC's independent assessment process. MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in over 100 countries.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Regional Director Americas, this exciting and demanding role will lead our Latin America team and build on the achievements of the past decade that have seen significant engagement from fisheries in Latin America.

The post holder will be charged with developing MSC's Latin America strategy, building and strengthening key relationships amongst the seafood harvest sector, processors, governments and the conservation community and ensuring the delivery of our core objectives for the Latin America sub-region. Enhancing partner satisfaction from their engagement in the program will be a core performance objective.

As part of the MSC's Corporate Strategy Group, the post holder will also be responsible for contributing to the delivery of the vision and mission of the MSC more broadly and to the collective management and strategic development of the organisation.

An experienced leader and manager, you will lead and be responsible for outreach staff and consultants managing engagement with fisheries and other stakeholders throughout the Latin America, and have the confidence and stature to represent the MSC externally in a wide variety of contexts.

Able to make decisions in a rapidly changing environment, and with extensive knowledge of the Latin American seafood and fishing industries, sustainable seafood movement and/or NGO sector, you will also have a strong focus on the delivery of excellent customer services, and be able to demonstrate to others your empathy and interest in the MSC's mission and objectives.

This position will be located in Mexico (preferred); though other locations may be considered. This positon offers an attractive salary.

Responsibilities (Key Results and Outcomes)

The work of the Program Director LA is linked to MSC's overarching objectives of:

  • Ensuring the credibility of the MSC.
  • Getting fisheries to enter the MSC programme.
  • Getting certified product to export markets or domestic if relevant.
  • Maintaining and building strategic relationships with the MSC's stakeholders.
  • Increasing awareness of the MSC.
  • Maintaining quality internal systems and processes.
  • Ensuring financial security and sustainability of the MSC.

To achieve these goals, further defined in the regional strategic plans, the post holder will perform the following functions either directly or through coordination/leadership of internal teams:

  • Promote the role, credibility and value of the MSC's fishery certification system to LA stakeholders, including those in the fisheries sector, commercial markets, governments, research organisations, environmental groups and other elevant agencies.
  • Liaise with fisheries and supply chain partners who have entered the MSC program to supply accurate commercial and marketing information to the Americas Team.
  • Provide oral and written advice and suggestions for strengthening and streamlining MSC assessments and procedures through briefings, submissions and reports to MSC staff.
  • Contribute to policy development and strategic course of the MSC organisation in context of the Senior Americas Team, internal working groups and other organisational structures within MSC.
  • Develop annual work plans in accordance with the MSC's Integrated Strategic Plan; manage LA team capacity accordingly and report on progress against these agreed work plans.
  • Undertake and support fundraising activities in the LA when appropriate, in conjunction with corporate Fundraising team.
  • Promote communication, fundraising and visibility opportunities for the MSC executive committee and Board of Trustees, wherever possible.
  • Work alongside the Corporate Services Director to ensure appropriate staff, office & IT capacity and performance in the region.
  • Undertake operational activity in relation to their individual skills and experience (commercial, fisheries or communications.)
Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Commercial/Technical
  • Post-graduate degree or equivalent in marketing or international business; or degree or postgraduate
  • degree or equivalent in fisheries or marine conservation biology or fisheries, natural resources or environmental management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fisheries and resource sustainability issues, particularly as they relate to wild capture fisheries and of the USA seafood industry and supply chains.
  • Fluent in written and spoken Spanish as native language and full competency in English is essential.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • A good working knowledge of sustainable development especially as it relates to fisheries and the food sector.
  • Computer and IT skills, including the use of standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint.) Knowledge of the role of eco-labelling.
Stakeholder Oriented
  • Demonstrated experience with meeting and/or workgroup organisation and facilitation.
  • Experience working with stakeholders and other external parties, preferably in the fishery and commercial sector.
  • Evidence of an ability to successfully manage relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and collaborators, with a people-centred approach to work is essential.
  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the MSC program and contribute to the information of the
  • MSC team about America's cultural issues.

  • Demonstrated experience in management of staff and budgets at an appropriate level.
  • Excellent personal organisational and work planning skills, demonstrating high productivity and ability to manage competing work priorities.
