SCS recognizes well-managed fisheries and seafood suppliers that conform to the international sustainability standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). SCS was the first certifier to become accredited by MSC in 2000 and has since certified more than 2 million metric tons of seafood.

SCS is now seeking accreditation to the newly formed Aquaculture Stewardship Council -ASC. The Aquaculture Stewardship Council is an independent not-for-profit organization founded in 2009 by World Wildlife Fund and The Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative to manage the global standards for responsible aquaculture. The ASC will work with aquaculture producers, seafood processors, retail and foodservice companies, scientists, conservation groups and the public to promote the best environmental and social choice in seafood. The ASC is expected to be in full operation by mid 2011.

Position Overview: 

The Program Associate of SCS`s Sustainable Seafood program will report to the program manager and will be responsible for scheduling as well as auditing aquaculture operations to the ASC standards.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Working in teams of professionals assessing aquaculture operations throughout the world to the ASC standards
  • Assembling, training and scheduling certification teams for Aquaculture certification
  • Contribute to establishing ASC accreditation through Accreditation Services International (ASI), tracking ASC developments;
  • Contribute to other parts of SCS`s Sustainable Seafood program (MSC Fisheries and CoC certification)

Qualifications:

  • University or post-graduate degree in environmental science, aquaculture or fisheries biology
  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience in aquaculture
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural situation and with a wide range of people with diverse economic, political and professional backgrounds in both public and private sectors
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as in a team
  • Ability to communicate well with clients and to establish and maintain effective relationships
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English
  • Computer skills-proficiency in Microsoft word and excel required
  • Proficiency in Spanish or Japanese a plus
