The Organization

Californians for Alternatives to Toxics is a dynamic, 22-year-old regional organization based in Old Town, Eureka, California. The organization works to make data on pesticide use more accessible to the public, increases access to information on the effects of and alternatives to pesticides, advocates for its members before government agencies, pursues litigation when necessary and mobilizes grassroots campaigns to implement least toxic practices in all sectors of Northern California. CATs' efforts have led to many positive changes in the Northern California region and often benefit people from beyond the region.

Position Overview

CATs seeks a motivated individual with a passion for protecting the environment and demonstrated ability to produce excellent work to join its team. The Program Associate works with the Program Director to plan and implement activities to further CATs' agenda, participates in producing and disseminating information aimed to inform all sectors of communities, and works to promote initiatives to reform pest control policies and practices. It is a senior-level position.


Responsibilities

  • Monitor, research and analyze information regarding pesticide use patterns and alternative pest management approaches in program areas.
  • Develop relationships and work with colleagues in the region to promote local and state initiatives that advance CATs' programs.
  • Represent CATs at hearings, meetings, and conferences and with the media.
  • Monitor and respond to government and commercial activities related to program areas.
  • Compose articles, analytical reports and program evaluations.
  • Produce public forums, conduct presentations and workshops.
  • Co-coordinate development of Web content.
  • Work with team to develop strategies and work plans to further program objectives.

Qualifications

  • Ability to conduct background research on and stay abreast of science and policy developments.
  • Understanding of general biological principles, terminology and technical literature.
  • Ability to adjust work schedules and priorities to meet deadlines, juggle multiple assignments, and work efficiently in a dynamic, flexible environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to function effectively in teams, as a member and as a leader, and work with people with a variety of interests.
  • Bachelor's degree with advanced degree (e.g. Master's or law) or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in campaigns to protect the environment and promote environmental justice.
  • Familiarity with the Northern California region.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is desired though not required.

Salary / Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience, with a range of $30,000 to $34,000 per year; health benefits and two weeks cumulative vacation in the first year are provided.
