Description
DUTIES:
Responsible for providing technical leadership of photovoltaic systems R&D within the National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV). This NREL/NCPV systems R&D is a part of the NCPV virtual laboratory’s Photovoltaic System Performance and Engineering Project, which includes collaborative and closely integrated efforts with the Sandia National Labs (Albuquerque, NM), the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), and the Southwest Technology Development Institute (SWTDI, Las Cruces, NM). Responsibilities include leading and conducting advanced systems R&D that addresses the development of new and novel concepts and approaches concerning emerging photovoltaic (PV) technologies; and the design, performance, characterization, and technology validation of prototype systems. Systems will encompass electrical grid and non-grid connected applications such as building integrated photovoltaics, residential, stand-alone, and utility electrical grid support. In addition, photovoltaic systems as a part of integrated hybrid (solar, wind, biomass, diesel generators, microturbines, etc.) systems/applications/markets are also addressed. Responsible for the management and leadership of an NREL-internal R&D task that includes two staff engineers and one or two technicians. Much of the R&D will be conducted jointly with NCPV colleagues at Sandia National Labs, FSEC, and the SWTDI, and with industry and/or university colleagues/partners. Selected individual will be responsible for working closely with Sandia National Labs, FSEC, SWTDI, and the PV industry to develop national strategic directions and priorities for PV systems R&D, which lead to the successful development and commercialization of PV electrical power systems. This individual will be accountable for active involvement in various national and international standards and codes development [IEEE, IEC, and PVGAP], specific to PV systems and/or related technologies, as necessary to help the successful adoption and commercialization of PV technologies. REQUIRED:
Doctoral degree in relevant discipline or equivalent relevant experience and 17 years of relevant work experience. In-depth systems R&D knowledge and experience with PV and/or similar electrical power systems/electronics, and a proven ability to lead complex, high-impact technical projects. Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, and a proven ability to work collaboratively and constructively with fellow peers and executive managers. National and international recognition/involvement in relevant scientific and/or engineering field. PREFERRED:
Advanced Electrical Engineering degree with 17 to 20 years of PV systems/components R&D and applications experience. Proven knowledge of electrical utility power grids and requirements, as they relate to PV electrical power applications. Thorough knowledge of state-of-the art emerging and commercial PV electrical power systems and components, and current industry consensus standards and codes and related issues/activities.
