Description

The Schoodic Institute, was created in 2004 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Schoodic Education and Research Center of Acadia National Park. The Schoodic Education and Research Center is one of 20 research learning centers located at national parks across the United States, and is the largest of all these facilities.

The Institute was created by the Acadia National Park (ANP) and local private citizens to help develop and operate the Schoodic Education and Research Center (SERC) campus in Winter Harbor, Maine. Undertaking research and education programs aimed at increasing understanding of the biodiversity and resources of all of Acadia National Park and its environs, the Schoodic Institute also aims to contribute to a larger understanding of major national and global environmental issues. A host of academic and other institutional partners cooperate closely with the Institute to provide funding, research and educational activity, and community programs.

SERC and the Institute represent a bold vision and confidence in a bright future for the Schoodic Peninsula and surrounding communities. With over $23 million invested, ANP and SERC supporters have created a first-class facility and a far-reaching agenda. Achieving this agenda requires strong science and education research, education programming for all ages, a more dynamic connection with the local arts community, and business savvy at every level. Success will strengthen the economy of the Peninsula.
