Position Overview

Western Rivers Conservancy seeks an extraordinary leader to build on the organization’s 35-year history of purchasing and permanently protecting land along the great rivers of the West.

Guided by its motto, “Sometimes to save a river, you have to buy it,”  Western Rivers Conservancy takes a land acquisition approach to conservation that delivers tangible and permanent results for the benefit of fish, wildlife and people. WRC purchases land along the West’s finest rivers and streams to conserve habitat and create public access for all to enjoy. To ensure the lands it acquires are protected in perpetuity, WRC transfers them to long-term stewards like the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, state parks, and Tribal Nations. WRC has created sanctuaries for fish and wildlife and secured recreational access along 211 rivers and streams around the West, protecting more than 400 river miles and over 197,000 acres of land in eight western states.

WRC’s long-time President has announced her intention to retire, prompting the Board to initiate a national search for a successor to lead one of the West’s most accomplished conservation organizations, one that is delivering meaningful, lasting outcomes for the great rivers of the West.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a talented land conservation professional to provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction to a high-performing team. WRC seeks a savvy dealmaker who brings deep experience with complex real estate transactions and the business acumen to successfully navigate complex political landscapes. As WRC’s leader, the President will inspire the organization’s Board, staff, and funders around WRC’s mission in the context of a results-oriented culture with a laser focus on river conservation. The position requires someone who values and can cultivate a workplace culture of heads-down hard work and equally hard play among a staff and board who are passionate about rivers and the job of protecting them for future generations. The position requires commitment to maintaining a culture that is actively inclusive of rich and varied perspectives, one that fosters trust, partnership, and innovation alike.

Location

  • The President will work from WRC’s Portland, OR offices and manage a distributed team throughout the West. Regular travel is required.

Start Date

  • Winter 2024

Compensation

  • A competitive compensation package, including a comprehensive benefits package, will be offered based on experience. The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $215,000 — $240,000. Qualified candidates outside of the range will be considered.
