• We educate, engage, and advocate at the federal level, in wholesale electricity markets, and more than a dozen states for executive actions, legislation, and regulations that expand the size and value of markets for advanced energy products and services. We also offer business intelligence products and select business development opportunities to help advanced energy companies grow.

Position Description

AEE seeks a smart, innovative Policy Principal to join AEE’s professional services team. The Principal will work with AEE team members to develop and implement multi-year strategies and campaigns designed to achieve policy successes at the state level that will expand markets for the advanced energy industry.

Examples of initiatives across the organization where the Principal might work include developing regulatory strategies and filings that reflect AEE interests in creating a 21st Century Electricity System and expanding electric vehicle adoption, engaging in regulatory and stakeholder efforts to expand opportunities for advanced energy in competitive wholesale markets, policy education efforts, policy campaigns to enact pro-advanced energy regulation in states and defending existing advanced energy policies in key states.

AEE is seeking a highly energetic and self-starting professional who brings a background in regulatory engagement and/or issue advocacy at the state or federal level or in wholesale markets, and experience with energy markets and advanced energy technologies including electric vehicles. The Principal will work collaboratively as part of project teams under the direction of Managing Directors and with other members of the professional services team on both internal and external projects. The Principal will work collaboratively with key stakeholders to advance AEE’s policy agenda in priority states and wholesale markets.

Candidates should be creative and flexible, with the ability to work on multiple projects as needed to support AEE’s work in a variety of areas. The successful candidate will also have excellent quantitative analysis skills to support advanced energy market and technology-specific analyses. Candidates will need to have the ability to travel (post pandemic) to meet with AEE members, coalition allies and stakeholders, and public officials.

• Location: Flexible, but Washington D.C. preferred
• Travel: On an as needed basis (up to 30%, post pandemic) to targeted states for advocacy days, technical conferences, meetings with key allies and stakeholders, communications outreach, and other efforts on behalf of AEE Draft press statements, write blog posts, participate in webinars, and create opportunities to showcase advanced energy.

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with AEE professional services team members on developing and implementing strategies to meet short and long-term policy objectives in key states as part of AEE’s core portfolio. The focus will be on regulatory engagement but could also include support of administrative or legislative activities.
• Work with AEE members to develop policy positions and reach consensus on policy positions in key states and on key issues. Facilitate member calls and lead policy discussions to coalesce member input and prioritize areas of interest and engagement.
• Work with AEE professional services team members in support of AEE’s decision-maker engagement and education program, including educational work with public utility commissioners on advanced energy industry topics and trends.
• Develop and file comments at state utility commissions on key regulatory issues that move us towards a 21st Century Electricity System, including utility business model reform, performance-based regulation, planning proceedings, rate design (including renewable energy tariffs), and other related areas.
• As part of AEE’s Expanding Wholesale Markets work, support AEE and AEE member engagement in the stakeholder processes in priority markets like PJM and ISO New England and contribute to the development of comments on priority issues before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
• Work collaboratively with AEE professional services team members on additional various policy areas as needed, ranging from transportation electrification to clean energy standards.
• Organize member engagement opportunities through direct decision maker engagement including lobby days and candidate education, earned media, and expert testimony; and participate in legislative, rulemaking, and administrative processes, as needed.
• Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with coalition partners, allies, and key legislative, regulatory and administrative staff.
• Work with communications staff to identify and seize opportunities to showcase stories and evidence of the advanced energy economy taking hold in the states.
• Draft press statements, write blog posts, participate in webinars, and create opportunities to showcase advanced energy.
• Work with market intelligence and professional service teams to track and analyze policy developments around the country using PowerSuite products such as BillDigest and DocketDigest.
  
• Model development and analysis: help build, update, and maintain quantitative market and economic assessments of policy and regulatory initiatives, and other industry analysis products.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, Political Science, Public Policy, Economics or Engineering preferred or applicable comparable experience
• Minimum of four years of professional experience in regulatory filings and engagement in the energy or transportation sector
• Strong analytic background with capability to model energy market and technology trends and conduct other quantitative analyses of the advanced energy industry; proficiency with spreadsheets is required.
• An interest in energy and transportation issues and an understanding of the importance of policy advocacy to advance an organizational agenda
• Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal
• Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, and excellent listening and problem-solving skills

Compensation

• Salary: Commensurate with experience
