Climate and Energy Program

Third Way’s Climate and Energy Program is seeking a Policy Advisor who can advance our efforts to promote innovative, technology-inclusive solutions that put the US on the fastest, fairest path to net-zero emissions while helping American industries and workers lead in global clean energy markets. This member of our team will help identify opportunities for the Biden Administration to maximize the impact of historic investments being made in clean energy, for Congress to strengthen and fund high-priority RD&D activities, and for innovation advocates to effectively communicate the value and benefits of federal innovation efforts to the larger policy community.

As the Policy Advisor for innovation, a typical day might include…

  • Conducting research and quantitative analysis to better understand and explain how to bring emerging clean energy technologies to commercial success, and the economic and climate impacts of deploying innovative clean energy technologies;
  • Authoring persuasive reports, memos, and other products suggesting federal actions and funding streams to support clean energy innovation in the US, strengthen US competitiveness, and maximize benefits to the economy and workers;
  • Analyzing proposed policy ideas and assessing their impact on the development, commercialization, and deployment of new technologies;
  • Overseeing a robust, team-wide operation to drive smart investments in clean energy through the Congressional appropriations process;
  • Supervising the work of the Climate and Energy Fellow, who reports directly to you;
  • Coordinating diverse coalitions of organizations advocating for clean energy innovation policy;
  • Managing multiple consultants assisting with innovation-related deliverables;
  • Engaging with relevant funders and contributing to proposals and reports for the philanthropic grants that support our work;
  • Identifying new opportunities for CEP to enhance its efforts in clean energy innovation policy;
  • Representing CEP in speaking opportunities and other public-facing capacities related to Third Way’s innovation work; and,
  • Working with other members of Third Way’s climate and energy, communications, and outreach teams to help plan and execute events and digital collateral around the policies needed to help focus, fund, and scale clean energy innovation.


This might be the job for you, if you have…

  • At least three years of experience in energy innovation policy or a relevant field;
  • An understanding of the federal innovation ecosystem and Congressional appropriations process;
  • Demonstrated the ability to speak and write about complex topics in a way that is clear and compelling for a non-expert audience;
  • Experience with quantitative analysis, like interpreting and presenting data on clean energy cost curves or federal budgets;
  • A knack for creative problem-solving and collaborating with a diverse team;
  • A passion for advancing smart ideas to help the world achieve emissions goals while creating more opportunities for American businesses and workers in emerging clean energy markets.

Within 1 month, you'll...

  • Participate in Third Way’s comprehensive onboarding program. You’ll learn about all aspects of Business Operations, which includes benefits, IT, finance, payroll, labor tracking, and office operations.
  • Meet your Third Way Buddy, be introduced to the entire staff, and start to learn the TW’s culture.
  • Participate in weekly one-on-ones with your manager to ensure you fully understand the expectations of the job and have an opportunity to receive constructive feedback.
  • Attend your departmental weekly meetings. You’ll learn about the key goals of your program, how they’re doing, what challenges they face, and how you will contribute.
  • Gain an understanding of the roles of your direct report and other teammates, and how each contributes to the organization.
  • Become familiar with the Climate and Energy Program’s objectives and strategy regarding clean energy innovation.
  • Participate in innovation stakeholder coalition calls.
  • Share “coffee” with the Chief Operating Officer and learn about the history and growth of Third Way.

Within 2 months, you'll...

  • Attend program overview sessions to learn more about each team’s contribution to Third Way’s mission.
  • Participate in, at least, one of our internal Professional Development trainings.
  • Learn about and experience Third Way’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and respect in the workplace.
  • Begin to establish relationships with our key allies and expert advisors.
  • Develop a cadence for check-ins with your direct reports and other supervisory duties.
  • Take part in meetings with federal agency and congressional staff.

Within 3 months, you'll...

  • Feel a sense of comfort and familiarity with the staff, your team, and your work.
  • Continue to attend weekly departmental meetings with a stronger understanding of your team’s strategic goal.
  • Bring new ideas and suggestions to your weekly one-on-ones with your manager.
  • Help your direct report identify opportunities to advance their policy portfolios and update their work plan accordingly.
  • Complete your 90 day self-evaluation and performance review with your manager.
  • Partner with your manager to establish your long-term goals for the remainder of the year.
