Appalachian Headwaters is a nonprofit organization focused on restoration of native ecosystems and environmental education in central Appalachia. Headwaters currently manages thousands of acres mined land restoration projects and other pollinator habitat restoration projects in central Appalachia. 

Headwaters started its native plant nursery in 2018 to grow native plants and seeds for its mined land restoration, environmental education, and pollinator gardens. Planting nursery stock from seed collected from central Appalachia will contribute to success of our projects. We have two greenhouses, two shade houses, and hundreds of acres of open growing space across two sites.

Position Overview

We have recently formed the Appalachian Pollinator Center, an educational outreach and research about pollinator health and habitat. Headwaters also manages the Appalachian Beekeeping Collective (ABC), a beekeeper training and support program focused on honey bees. The Plant Nursery and Grounds Manager will help lead Headwaters’ native plant horticulture program in support of these programs.

Location: Lewisburg, West Virginia

Responsibilities  

The Native Plant Horticulturist will be responsible for:

  • managing and expanding the nursery,
  • plant propagation and care,
  • grounds maintenance and invasive species removal
  • planting and maintaining plants at educational and restoration sites,
  • managing nursery program staff, and
  • other activities that fit the staff’s talents and organizational needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s (required) or master’s (preferred) degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field;
  • At least two years’ experience in nursery work and horticulture;
  • Interest in native plants;
  • Compatible with our program mission, including a dedication to environmental protection, organic plant growing and restoration of native ecosystems; and
  • Knowledge and experience operating and maintaining farm equipment is a plus.

Compensation

  • Full time salaried position ($50-70K), with benefits including up to 10% retirement match and fully paid medical insurance.
