The Peregrine Fund is committed to citizen participation in research and conservation. Partnership projects will be developed and designed to use the power of the public to gather information needed to measure and understand raptor distribution and abundance and their limiting factors in North America, and to mitigate those factors that can be managed. Future interests also include expansion into the Neotropics, and eventually worldwide.
Position Overview:
The Peregrine Fund seeks a dynamic individual trained in animal ecology to lead and develop its Partnerships Program. We are looking for a scientist with a strong interest in and commitment to research, education, and outreach.
The Director will be expected to build partnerships with the public, governmental and nongovernmental conservation organizations, expand the participant base for the project by collaborating with The Peregrine Fund's Development, Communications and Marketing team, and take advantage of opportunities that arise to promote the project by giving enthusiastic presentations to a broad audience.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in raptor biology with potential to become a dynamic leader and voice for The Peregrine Fund's Partnership Programs. Also required is a commitment to formal science education and graduate supervision, as well as a strong interest in public outreach through partnerships managed by project staff.
Dedication and enthusiasm for raptor conservation are essential, as are the ability to multi-task and handle a variety of initiatives in a self-directed fashion. The candidate will have the technical knowledge to set up and expand web-based data management, and data analysis and dynamic mapping tools, and coordinate efforts to bring historic data into the database.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as leader of The Peregrine Fund's Partnerships Program, a group of projects involving thousands of participants in the study of raptor ecology with multiple levels of engagement, including online and field experiences.
- Provide direction of a research agenda within the Partnerships Program to answer significant conservation questions, and publish results in the scientific literature.
- Coordinate all aspects of project delivery and supervise staff who recruit participants, provide participant support for field observations, such as nest box monitoring, and provide guidance on entering data.
- Design, develop content for, update, and oversee maintenance of the interactive website and data entry system.
- Collaborate with web programmer, designer, and communications staff to ensure data accessibility, and promotion of the project online and in other media, including the popular literature.
- Assist development and marketing staff to promote the project and raise funds for project continuation.
- Keep the President and Vice President apprised of new developments with, and changes to, the project.
- Manage the project budget.
- Collaborate with all other Peregrine Fund projects and perform other tasks as requested and necessary.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in wildlife science, animal ecology, or closely related discipline; experience with wildlife research field techniques; proven ability to perform quantitative data analyses and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals; and more than 2 years post-doctoral experience or equivalent.
- Understanding of and experience with raptor biology is important to this position.
- Experience in writing and designing educational programs for the public or experience with undergraduate teaching.
- Proven skills in project management and coordination are essential, along with excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Post-doctoral experience; proposal writing and success with obtaining competitive extramural grants; college teaching experience; a record of scholarly publication in wildlife science; collaborative research experience with wildlife management agencies or NGOs; and the ability to contribute to research, teaching, and/or public engagement.
- Experience studying patterns of spatial and temporal variation in avian distribution, abundance, and other ecological and population parameters, such as breeding success and survival, at continental or regional scales.
- Proficiency with the World Wide Web is important, along with a strong interest in using the web as a tool to conduct research and educate the public.
- Familiarity with spatial analysis software such as ArcGIS, publishing software such Dreamweaver and In Design, and Net Community.
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the applicant. Screening of applications will begin 1 November 2010 and continue until the position is filled. The successful candidate will work at The Peregrine Fund's headquarters in Boise, Idaho, and may participate in teaching and graduate supervision on the campus of Boise State University or other universities.
