Background:
The Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) is a non-profit service, conservation, and education organization modeled after the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps. The VYCC instills the values of personal responsibility, hard work, education, and respect for the environment in young people. Corps Members, young adults 16-24, work, live, and learn together in small groups, completing priority conservation projects throughout Vermont under the guidance of highly-trained leaders. Potential projects include state park management, bridge and shelter construction, and trail maintenance.
Duties:
Co-lead a group of five to ten high school and college-age crew members in managing all aspects of a Vermont State Park and campground. Potential project sites include state parks within the Green Mountains and Champlain Islands.
Train, motivate, supervise, and support crew members. Facilitate VYCCs daily education program based on contemporary environmental and social issues.
Create a sense of community with a diverse crew of young people. Interface with State Park staff and local community members. Perform Park Ranger duties such as leading nature and recreation programs for the public, providing customer service, managing facilities, grounds, and park finances, as well as managing a computerized campsite reservation system and enforcing park regulations.
All positions are residential with housing provided in a Vermont State Park. Couples encouraged to apply.
Manager positions run from late April to mid-September or mid-October 2003; Assistant positions run from mid-May to late August/early September 2003.
Qualifications:
Maturity and ability to motivate young adults. Excellent communication and organization skills. Self confidence. Strong work ethic. Outdoor leadership experience, knowledge of park management, and experience with group facilitation and experiential education preferred.
Must enjoy working with the public. First Aid, CPR, and drivers license. Minimum age for Park Managers is 22. Minimum age for Assistant Managers is 20.
Benefits:
Managers: $360480/wk. Assistants: $330-350/wk. Room and board included for all positions. Qualifying staff may also receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (for tuition or student loan repayment) between $1,000 and $2,500 (amount depends on the length of employment). Positions include a paid, nationally recognized training.
Skills gained include youth leadership, conflict resolution, state park management, environmental education, team-building facilitation, and time management. J-1 VISAs will be provided for international staff. International applicants should apply by January 31, 2003.
