Since 1988, the Working Group on Community Right-to-Know has defended and improved the public's right-to-know about environmental and public health concerns in our communities. The Working Group is the clearinghouse for public interest advocates to track and act on right-to-know issues in order to make government responsive, hold corporations accountable, empower communities, and protect public health and the environment. The Working Group has been instrumental in developing right-to-know laws and programs that include the Toxics Release Inventory, safe drinking water right-to-know, and reform of EPA's ability to provide environmental information to the public.
Job Description
The Working Group seeks a talented individual to serve as the group's Outreach Coordinator. This person will develop and facilitate campaigns to promote and protect the public's right to know about environmental and public health concerns. The Outreach Coordinator will work with the Director and the Advisory Committee (including representatives from U.S. PIRG, National Environmental Trust, Environmental Defense, OMB Watch, and others) to support the community right-to-know activities of both leading national environmental organizations and a nationwide activist network.
Duties and Responsibilities
Communicate with national, state and local public interest advocates about right-to-know issues; provide technical assistance to activists; research and write reports, a newsletter, press releases and more; organize meetings and conferences; develop the nationwide network; extend and maintain an Internet presence, become the lead advocate in specific issue areas; and, work closely with the Director and participating organizations.
Qualifications
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; self-direction, motivation, and perseverance; strong commitment to public interest work; focus and organization; ability to coordinate multiple projects; basic computer skills; very good writing skills; familiarity with legislative and regulatory processes; bachelor's degree or greater; one or more years of experience as an organizer, work with activist organizations, and familiarity with toxics issues preferred.
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with experience. Full health coverage is offered.
