Help inspire wonder through challenging, rewarding work in amazing locations! The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) offers the most extensive, longest running, and in-depth summer science camps program in the Northwest and is seeking Outdoor Science Instructors to teach natural science and natural resource management topics in various settings, including trailside, van-based, rafting, canoeing and field classrooms, to students and campers enrolled in OMSI's field programs, residential outdoor science school and summer science camps and adventures.
Position Overview:
Positions are available at all of OMSI's Outdoor Science Camps. Camp focus ranges from natural science at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument to coastal ecology and geology studied in wild areas ranging from the San Juan Islands to the Redwoods of Northern California.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in a natural science discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience, field instruction, outdoor school and/or previous camp experience. Must be advanced in First Aid and CPR, possess Commercial Driver's License; training available during non-working days at employee's expense.
Candidate will also need to have working knowledge of natural sciences including: field ecology, geology, astronomy, archaeology, paleontology, and marine biology, depending on site. Must have working knowledge of outdoor education pedagogy, learning styles and instructional strategies, physical ability to lead campers in hikes of up to 10 miles and excellent communications skills; both oral and written.
Pre-employment and/or pre-duty checks, such as criminal background check, reference checks, American Camp Association (ACA) background checks (& on annual basis), requirements in the MVR Policy including passing Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and Alcohol & Drug Test for non-CDL Drivers Policy, including pre-duty drug test are required.
Minimum 2 years of formal or informal teaching experience, Wilderness First Responder and Life guard certification (training available during non working days at employee's expense) are preferred.
Compensation: Exempt position with benefits, Seasonal, Full-Time (February 2010 - November 2010). Work schedule varies depending on programming.
