Description
Camp Cosby is looking for two interns to join our lakeside community of eight residential environmental educators. We are currently working together to take a successful 25 year old program to the next level in environmental education, combining hands-on science and experiential history with fun team-building games and goofy nature songs. We serve 4th to 6th grades of schools from Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, and Chattanooga areas. Groups are chaperoned by parents and teachers, and most stay for three days at a time.
Duties:
Intern responsibilities include helping to tend our organic garden, working on projects to improve educational resources and the physical site, office assistance, teaching, and participation in weekly scheduling and in-service meetings. Subject areas that we teach about include Aquatic and Forest Ecology, Wildlife Ecology and Adaptations, Sensory Awareness, Night Hikes, Campfire, Canoeing, Maps, Orienteering, Team Building, Climbing (Alpine Tower), Living History/Underground Railroad Simulation, and others.
Training is provided. The upcoming intern term will be August 18 until December 12, 2003. Shorter-term opportunities are also available from August 18 to September 19, September 22 to October 29, and October 29 to November 25.
Qualifications:
We are seeking candidates with some college experience or undergraduate degrees. Experience working with children, knowledge of biology, and musical ability are a plus.
If you are interested in gaining experience and learning about outdoor environmental education practices and administration, and you would like to live in a fairly remote oak/hickory/pine forest with some great people, a lake, and an organic garden, get in touch with us! We are located on Lake Logan Martin near Talladega National Forest, with 135 acres of mixed hardwood and evergreen forests and 2 1/2 miles of lakefront. We are 1 hour from Birmingham, AL, 2 hours from Atlanta, GA, and 4 hours from the Gulf Coast and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Animals that we see on our site include armadillos, wild turkeys, foxes, owls, accipiters, bats, salamanders, great blue herons, turtles, tree frogs, and red-headed woodpeckers. Our staff includes citizens of several nations and we value diversity, creativity, flexibility, and a sense of humor.
Camp Cosby will provide the selected candidates with a stipend of $100 per week plus full room and board. Opportunities to earn extra income will occasionally be available for those who choose to work on weekends. Some evening hours are required.
Employment is through the YMCA of Greater Birmingham.
