Description

The Pacific Northwest is fast becoming a global leader in catalyzing the new technologies, enterprises, and policies that will drive private and public investment toward clean energy and other climate solutions. Climate Solutions has been at the forefront of this movement as well as a recognized national leader in effective state and regional action on climate.

Climate Solutions' mission is to accelerate practical and profitable solutions to global warming by galvanizing leadership, growing investment and bridging divides in the Pacific Northwest.

Since our founding in 1998, Climate Solutions has emerged as one of
the most effective, accomplished climate groups in the nation. In partnerships with an extraordinarily wide array of business, farm, government, and civic interests, Climate Solutions is building a new, sustainable prosperity in the region. And we aim to do it in
ways that build the technologies, policies, and enterprises that can deliver climate solutions to the world.

Climate Solutions is a $1.6 million/year and growing operation with offices in Seattle and Olympia, and plans to hire additional staff based in either Idaho or Montana in the coming months. Climate Solutions now seeks an experienced and entrepreneurial leader to open our Oregon office and serve as our Oregon State Director.

The next few years are critical for Oregon. The Governor has made climate change a top priority, and the state legislature will debate and decide upon landmark climate change legislation in 2009. In the private sector, Oregon is fast emerging as a global center for
clean energy and sustainable technology innovation, and is positioned - with continued policy leadership -- to grow a clean tech industry that employs tens of thousands of Oregonians in delivering climate-friendly solutions here and worldwide.

Climate Solutions has made significant contributions to advancing the vision of climatefriendly prosperity - and the coalitions and policies to support it -- in Oregon. Our work stretches back to the groundbreaking 2001 report, Poised for Profit: How Clean Energy Can Power the Next High-Tech Job Surge -- commissioned with top economic development and energy agencies in Oregon, as well as Washington and British Columbia -- and running through our recent NW Business Leaders' clean energy and climate campaigns.

Additionally, for the past 8 years, we have worked closely with numerous Oregon partners on the annual Harvesting Clean Energy conference, the NW's premiere event bringing together the mainstream agriculture and energy communities to advance rural development through clean energy, including the 2004 and 2008 conferences hosted in Oregon. And we played a key role, in cooperation with Oregon partners, in galvanizing the West Coast Governors Global Warming Initiative in 2003
and the Western Climate Initiative in 2007.

We plan to build on our record of success by hiring an Oregon State Director who can expand our existing networks and strategically harness them to help make Oregon an epicenter for clean energy and sustainability and a leader in climate policy and innovative
solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Climate Solutions' campaign for statewide climate policy in Oregon, interfacing and mobilizing with allies in the business, agriculture, environmental, and other communities; and coordinating Climate Solutions regional resources into these efforts.
  • Direct our business engagement strategies in Oregon, growing participation in our regional Business Leaders for Climate Solutions, helping orchestrate rollout of our major research reports, and creating other innovative business-oriented partnerships.
  • Serve as Climate Solutions' primary spokesperson in the state, including communicating with the media and public presentations.
  • Work with other Climate Solutions staff to educate and advocate to the Oregon Congressional delegation about critical federal climate and clean energy policy.
  • Work with the Executive Director and development staff to raise funds to support our Oregon operation.

The Oregon State Director reports to the Executive Director, who is based in Seattle.

Qualifications:

  • At least six years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience working with the Oregon business community
  • Understanding of advocacy campaigns, including communications, lobbying, organizing, and coalition building
  • Ability to work independently, but also willing and able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Climate Solutions

Compensation: Salary is competitive for non-profit sector, with generous vacation policy and full wealth/vision/dental coverage for employee.
