The not-for-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium opened in 1984, and has earned a reputation for being among the world's finest. Located on Monterey's historic Cannery Row and featuring exhibitions that focus on Monterey Bay's diverse habitats and wildlife, it attracts between 1.7 and 2.4 million visitors each year.

The institution's mission is to inspire conservation of the oceans, both through exhibits and through conservation research and advocacy in such areas as sea otters, open-ocean fishes research, marine protected areas, fisheries health and others. More than 80,000 schoolchildren take advantage of the aquarium's free education programs and tours every year.

Position Overview: 

Researches and analyzes current and emerging ocean conservation policy issues. Supports the CFFO policy program by helping develop and implement ocean conservation policy priorities for the aquarium.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and analysis on current and emerging ocean conservation policy issues identified through the CFFO strategic planning process, or as assigned.
  • Produce reports and briefing papers that present issues in concise form and outline recommended actions.
  • Work with CFFO staff and partners to recommend and implement policy priorities for the aquarium.
  • Conduct research and analysis on online advocacy initiatives related to ocean policy issues.
  • Works with CFFO staff and consultants to develop policy priorities for the aquarium's online advocacy program.
  • Work with CFFO staff and other aquarium staff to develop and update policy-related content in the "Take Action" exhibit and future conservation-related exhibits and programs.
  • Maintain up-to-date familiarity with a wide range of ocean policy issues relevant to the CFFO strategic plan and online advocacy program.
  • Supports CFFO outreach efforts by identifying opportunities for increased public involvement in policy processes at all levels, and developing and communicating relevant outreach materials.
  • Participate in training sessions for aquarium members, volunteers, and staff, together with community members, to help them engage in key policy processes.
  • Draft talking points and other policy documents for CFFO and aquarium senior staff.
  • Assist in developing, drafting, and revising the CFFO strategic plan, annual workplans, funding proposals, reports to donors, and budget proposals.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in marine ecology, environmental policy, environmental science, or equivalent experience is required.
  • Thorough understanding of current and emerging issues in marine conservation is critical.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct policy research is necessary.
  • Familiarity with online advocacy, including outreach to social networks and blogs, is highly desirable.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to multi-task are important.
  • Knowledge, comfort and proficiency in working with Microsoft Word and Excel are necessary.
