Wallowa Resources (WR) is a community-based 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, established in 1996 with leadership from Wallowa County Commissioners.

JOB SUMMARY

The Northern Blues Forest Communications and Landowner Engagement Specialist (Specialist) works alongside the Wallowa Resources’ Forestland Partnership Manager and regional partners to co-develop and implement (1) forest/fire resilience communications and (2) private forestland owner engagement/mobilization strategies across the Northern Blue Mountains Region (Northeast Oregon and Southeast Washington).  

The Specialist will support the (1) All Lands Communications and Storytelling and (2) Private Landowner Mobilization Work Groups of the newly formed Northern Blues All Lands Partnership - a multi-partner, landscape scale effort to organize and implement forest and fire resiliency restoration projects across public, private, and tribal forestlands. The Specialist will work closely with local and regional tribal, state, federal, nonprofit, and private landowner partners to develop and implement innovative communications and engagement techniques to ensure meaningful involvement of area tribes, partners, private forest landowners, and forestry workers in project coordination and implementation. The Specialist reports to the Wallowa Resources Forestland Partnership Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize, co-facilitate, and contribute to regular meetings of the Northern Blues All Lands Communication and Storytelling and Private Landowner Mobilization Workgroups. 
  • Help workgroup members develop and implement communications and marketing strategies supporting forest restoration and wildlife risk reduction projects, and private landowner engagement.
  • Help develop a menu of engagement techniques and educational resources such as tours, workshops, online webinars, and Firewise Communities that can be deployed depending on project objectives and geography. 
  • Develop private non-industrial landowner outreach materials, social media strategies, and mobilization techniques to connect landowners with the information, people, and resources to help them manage their lands and boost regional ecological health and resiliency.
  • Design, develop, and deliver landowner, forestry worker, partner, and project stories via the quarterly newsletter, landowner tip emails, press releases, videos, articles, photos, and Story Maps.
  • Maintain regular, open, clear, and timely communication with stakeholders, landowners, staff members, government officials, tribal governments, members of the public, and others. Respond to landowner inquiries for assistance in a friendly, timely manner. Work with partners to ensure follow-up and ongoing support.
  • Track landowner response data in database/spreadsheets. Circulate reports to staff and partners as necessary to continue to advance timelines and projects.
  • Write grant proposals and applications, including mid-project and post-project reporting.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly WR staff meetings and provide support, leadership, and facilitation to WR staff and WR special events and projects. Attend WR Board meetings, fundraisers, and events as relevant.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

The following are the minimum levels required to successfully perform the Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Design, Natural Resources Management, Community Development, or related field, or relevant experience developing and implementing communications and/or outreach strategies and plans with federal, state, tribal, nonprofit and/or other natural resource partnership groups, and coordination with media and newspaper contacts. 
  • Community organizing, conflict resolution, project management skills, and experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources required.  Experience working with non-industrial private landowners preferred.
  • Facilitation and meeting agenda setting experience with diverse teams to help the group successfully achieve collective goals.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and design abilities to produce professional and easy to understand publications, newsletters, and promotional materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge maintaining and updating social media accounts/feeds with timely, relevant information and news.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Adobe Acrobat/InDesign, Zoom, Google Drive, video editing, ArcGIS StoryMap, Website design.
  • Willingness to live and work in a small town and remote, rural location required. Familiarity with natural resource sector and issues in Northeast Oregon and Southeast Washington preferred.
  • A valid Driver’s License, or ability to get one, and an acceptable driving record according to WR’s auto liability policy requirements.
  • Consistently demonstrate teamwork and positive day-to-day work relationships and interactions with staff, board members, members of the public, and community partners.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • The Forest Communications & Landowner Engagement Specialist works primarily in an office or work-from-home environment; however, the position visits field locations including forests and wood product business sites. Those locations are subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions including rain, snow, wind, and dust.
  • The position frequently requires travel by car to attend meetings and occasional overnight travel.
  • The incumbent interacts constantly with staff, visitors, government agencies, and others.
  • The position sits, stands, walks, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours.
  • The incumbent must be able to lift, push, pull and move files and equipment in excess of 10 pounds.

COMPENSATION

  • Salary is $45,000 to $50,000 annually DOE.
