Have you heard about the Coloma Outdoor Discovery School? CODS has been providing a variety of outdoor education programs since 1990. Our residential programs offer public and private school students a 1-5 day experience in the following: California history, science, and ropes challenge. Our campus is located on the banks of the South Fork of the American River in the town of Coloma, California.
Our program has an excellent reputation for employing professional naturalists who are excellent role models, teachers, and well-educated individuals. The daytime naturalist position is available seasonally - from January thru June, and September thru November - with the option to return the following season.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Educating, supervising, and empowering students ages eight to eighteen.
* Facilitate learning experiences in the subject areas of living history, ecology, and adventure education.
* Facilitate social learning of students by modeling and teaching communication, respect, and responsibility.
* Initiate learning in many formats: at meals, in the field, on the trail, in large (100 or more students) and small (12-16 students) groups.
* Collaborate with other naturalists and program director to continually upgrade academic and logistic aspects of program.
* Commitment to personal development of teaching skills and background knowledge of subject areas.
* Manage teaching supplies and equipment inventory on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
* Promote communication among staff, students, teachers, and parent/counselors.
* Model environmentally sustainable behavior and ethics.
QUALIFICATIONS
* BA or BS in the fields of education, science, history or other related field
* Current CPR and First Aid certification
* Experience teaching in the classroom or at an outdoor education facility
* General knowledge of the developmental needs and behavior of school age children
* Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with others
* Excellent communication skills
* Ability to conduct skits, songs and/or stories in front of large groups (100+)
* Knowledge of California history and the Sierra Nevada foothills desirable
$108-$115/ 8 hr. day starting, dependent upon experience and education. Medical benefits available after 6 months of employment. Part/full time and substitute positions available.
