Description
~ At Community Rebuilds we aid income-qualifying families in building affordable and Energy Efficient Straw Bale Homes. ~
We are a nonprofit that provides assistance during all stages of the build. Before breaking ground we act as a free consultant for interested families, by connecting them with low interest rate loans and supplying stamped architectural plans free of cost. During the build we manage the build process and budget, and we provide a labor force of unpaid volunteer interns. After construction is complete we provide our families free consultation in home maintenance and repair.
We've created an Affordable Housing Program by taking several steps to reduce the cost of construction: we connect families with low interest rate loans; we recruit volunteer student interns to complete the bulk of the construction labor; we stick to a simple architectural plan for each build, thereby limiting architectural and engineering costs; and we use as many recycled and donated building materials as possible.
Internship Overview
- We are offering building and construction internships within natural building. We emphasize on straw bale construction, earthen plasters, and adobe floors.
- Interns participate in an affordable housing project with natural building techniques and are instructed on site with a lead builder professional and apprentice.
- Housing, a food stipend, and bulk foods are provided.
- We current offer positions in two locations.
- With this program we build affordable housing for the community and provide valuable education and skills in natural building to every person involved: homeowners, interns, CR staff and volunteers.
- Our interns spend 5 months working under licensed contractors and under the direction of our expert natural building instructors. They build a home from foundation to finish in five months. We are the only organization that offers this type of education free of cost.
- In these ways we work to improve our community and realize our mission to build energy-efficient housing, provide education on sustainability and improve the housing conditions of the workforce through an affordable program.
