Mission Thrive Summer Crew Leader

Position Overview

We are seeking four vibrant, dedicated Crew Leaders to assist with creating a transformative experience for our participants. We're seeking passionate and dedicated indivduals to help make this summer a success in building a community of healthy teen leaders who are changing Baltimore!  

The Mission Thrive Summer
program is a six week summer program for 25 9th and 10th
grade students. Launched in the summer
of 2013, Mission Thrive keeps teens engaged, learning, active, and healthy
throughout the summer.

Teens practice
team work, healthy habits, and job skills (and receive a paycheck) while
working on Real Food Farm (a six acre sustainable urban farm), cooking healthy
dishes with farm produce, learning yoga and basic fitness routines, and
planning and facilitating a health expo for the community.  We're seeking passionate and dedicated Crew
Leaders to help make this summer a success in building a community of healthy
teen leaders who are changing Baltimore! 

Responsibilities

During all activities,
including group activities and fieldwork, Crew Leaders are responsible for the
safety and well-being of the crew.  Mission
Thrive staff train Crew Leaders for a week and a half prior to the beginning of
the summer program.

Crew Leaders will also receive weekly feedback from the
staff as well as informal daily guidance from program supervisors and fellow
Crew Leaders. Mission Thrive Team Crew Leaders report to program staff from
Real Food Farm/Civic Works and the Institute for Integrative Health. 


Mission Thrive Crew Leaders
will be tasked to:

  • lead a crew of
    five-six teen participants throughout the six week program
  • direct and assist
    participants with farming tasks, including planting, weeding, and harvesting
  • direct and assist
    participants with cooking tasks, including healthy snack preparation and clean
    up
  • co-lead and
    participate in mini-lessons about the food system, nutrition, justice, resume
    writing, interviewing skills, and communication
  • lead and
    enthusiastically participate in team building games with participants
  • assist with
    preparing/setting up and cleaning up breakfast and lunch daily
  • assist
    participants with planning an end-of summer community health expo
  • assist staff in
    upholding behavioral standards and provide input on participant evaluations
  • participate in
    city-wide field trips with the entire group 

Hours

Crew Leaders are expected to
work 35 hours per week from June 9th - August 9th. Below is a sample week:

Monday - Thursday

8am - 9am: breakfast, sign in, preparing for the day.

9am - 12pm: supervise and work with crew of participants during breakout
session: farming, harvesting food
for lunch, cooking lunch

12pm - 1pm: lunch and nutrition workshop

1pm - 2pm: lead or participate in high-energy team building games, yoga,
exercise

2pm - 3pm: afternoon workshop or health expo planning 

Friday

8am - 9am: breakfast, sign in, preparing for the day

9am - 3pm: supervise participants in off-site field trip (such as to a
local restaurant, a community garden,
the pool, a nature reserve, or canoeing) 

Qualifications

We hold high
expectations for our teen participants in order to foster their potential and
expect our Crew Leaders to be strong role models of the healthy living and work
ethic that are a core part of the program's focus. 

Crew Leaders must be fully invested in the
program for the six weeks (in addition to two weeks of training prior and one
week of wrap up after) and possess an enthusiasm for working with teens.  While our program focuses on nutrition,
cooking skills, agriculture, and mindfulness (yoga), we do not require that
Crew Leaders are experts in all, only that candidates are open to learning and
engaging along with the participants.

Successful candidates will
have the following qualifications:

  • High school
    diploma
  • Excellent
    communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Experience
    working with teenagers, formally or informally
  • Ability to work
    independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to work
    outside performing physical labor in summer heat
  • Comfort in
    leading and motivating a group of teens
  • Be dependable,
    organized, flexible, and have a sense of humor
  • Enthusiasm for
    sustainable food movement, youth development, food justice, nutrition, or
    cooking
  • Be an excellent
    role model for community behavior and job performance standards
  • Working towards
    an education, environmental science, nutrition, or culinary degree are
    preferred  

Terms of Employment

This is a Civic Works AmeriCorps
position of 300 hours to be completed over the course of the summer. Crew Leaders
will receive a biweekly stipend of $125 and an education award of roughly
$1,100 that can be used for college, trade school, or to repay qualified
student loans.  In order to be a Civic Works AmeriCorps member, you
must be at least 17 years old; a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful
permanent resident; and able to pass a drug test and sex offender registry
check.
