Background:
Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers (FMR) is a non-profit organization whose
mission is to protect water quality and wildlife habitat and to advocate
sound land use in the three Milwaukee area watersheds of the Milwaukee,
Menomonee and Kinnickinnic Rivers. The service area of 850 square miles is
home to over a million people. Now seven years old, the organization
pursues its mission through education, conservation, research and advocacy.
Position Description:
The River Keeper serves as Executive Director of FMR and is responsible for
the management of the organization and the implementation of its programs.
The River Keeper is supervised by FMR's Board.
Responsibilities of the River Keeper include, but are not limited to:
- Leadership and Management
- Work with the Board to plan, develop, and implement projects which further
FMR's mission. - Manage staff to insure efficient business operations and coordination of
programs. As part of this, the River Keeper should develop and maintain job
descriptions, and provide guidance, training, and evaluation of FMR staff. - Provide leadership and motivate others (staff, Board, and membership) in
the framework of a team environment. - Work with the Board President(s) to develop Board meeting agendas, attend
Board meetings, and provide reports as needed. - Meet quarterly with the Executive Committee of the Board for review of
goals and accomplishments. - Annually review performance evaluation with the Executive Committee of the
Board. - Establish and maintain an effective and harmonious work environment. This
includes responsibility for staff relations, office equipment maintenance,
efficient office procedures, developing and maintaining software. - Maintain computer literacy skills including proficiency in
word-processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and member database software. - Work with the Board to develop budget, monitor finances and implement
realistic fundraising plans. - Provide monthly financial reports to the Board Treasurer.
- Oversee fund-raising, including:
- local membership development
- preparation of major grant proposals for governmental agencies,
foundations, and individual contributors, and - planning and execution of events.
- Serve as public advocate for Milwaukee's rivers, observing, documenting
and reporting environmentally-harmful activities, and (in consultation with
the Board) pursuing enforcement action or litigation when appropriate. - Develop mutually beneficial relationships with other regional
environmental and community organizations and leaders by gaining their
respect and developing opportunities for collaboration. - Promote public awareness of FMR with the target constituencies by
developing and implementing projects and events, such as annual river
clean-up, public education efforts, and other programming. - Act as spokesperson for FMR at media events and public speaking
engagements. - Work directly with local residents, elected officials, and stakeholders to
promote FMR's projects and achieve its objectives. - Plan and develop opportunities for education and for raising public
awareness on issues pertaining to FMR's mission. - Oversee FMR advocacy initiatives with federal, state and local agencies
(e.g. permit review and comment preparation, hearing testimony) when needed
to implement projects and pursue objectives. - Maintain active awareness of physical conditions and environmental issues
in FMR's target watersheds. - Investigate pollution sources, and support monitoring efforts.
- Promote and model empowerment by engaging FMR's membership in
environmental concerns.
