The White River Resource Conservation and Development was officially incorporated in 2001 to help address natural resource needs in south central Indiana.  White River RC&D brings people together to identity needs and foster opportunities in the economic, environmental, and social areas of south central Indiana.

Position Overview:

The watershed coordinator will be responsible for developing a watershed management plan for the Mill Creek/Blue River watershed in a manner that is inclusive of all stakeholders. The coordinator will work closely with government agencies, non-profits, and individual citizens in the community to develop the plan. The coordinator will organize and facilitate steering committee meetings and education programs, prepare draft plan documents, coordinate volunteers, and assist in the water quality monitoring program. Specific duties are discussed below.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide leadership in developing a watershed management plan through the collection and analysis of land use and resource information, identification and clarification of stakeholder concerns, establishment of goals, and supporting locally initiated strategies.
  2. Provide leadership in community outreach efforts related to watershed planning. This includes developing and disseminating outreach materials; and conducting an education and outreach program including field days, workshops, and presentations. The coordinator will be responsible for maintaining a project website and preparing press releases.
  3. Assist with water quality monitoring.
  4. Coordinate Steering Committee activities. Provide technical support to the steering committee. Assist in preparing meeting agenda and coordinating activities to implement project. Provide leadership to develop strong working relationships among steering committee members, stakeholders, and other federal, state, local government. The Coordinator will also assist subcommittees as necessary.
  5. Oversee 319 Grant. Maintain financial records necessary to manage grant. Keep project on time and on budget. Write quarterly and final reports to IDEM.

Qualifications: 

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

Candidates should have knowledge of urban and agricultural conservation practices. They should exhibit experience with conservation planning, technical report writing, and field work in order to develop the watershed management plan. Interpersonal and public speaking skills and ability to work with diverse stakeholders are required. Knowledge of grants and grant-writing preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in environmental sciences, water resources, planning, or a related natural resource management field (or equal experience)
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and manage a complex multi-organizational project
  • Training and/or experience in organizational development, communications, consensus building, facilitation, and leadership skills
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and public relations skills
  • Working knowledge of watershed issues, non-point source pollution remediation strategies, and watershed management
  • Ability to work independently, establish work priorities, and manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Word and Excel, and ability to learn new computer applications.
  • Understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) and their use in watershed planning
  • Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals, groups, and units of government

Compensation: The Coordinator will report to the White River RC&D Board of Directors. The position pays between $30,000 and $40,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

** Note: The position does not include benefits. The position is funded for 2 years. Additional funding may be sought to continue the position.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). The Coordinator will be housed the USDA Service Center in Salem, Indiana. The position will entail some weekend and evening work commitments.
