Description

First Solar, a high-energy, rapidly growing developer and manufacturer of thin film Photovoltaic (PV) technology in solar modules is seeking a driven, results oriented Mechanical Design Engineer. The Mechanical Design Engineer is a key member of the First Solar team responsible for designing, implementing, and cost reducing solar power plant projects.

Summary of Primary Duties: 

Position responsibilities are focused on the development and design of novel Balance of System (BoS) equipment and solutions to achieve cost targets of the Company using First Solar modules. Lead design development activities for innovative and low cost mounting structures, module attachment and support devices, and develop automated and simple installation and construction procedures to achieve labor and material cost reduction targets. 

Design and development activities will include pilot product development and testing, and implementation and analysis of design alternatives; perform engineering design evaluations, develop a range of product designs, and make recommendations and alterations to the designs to improve quality of products and/or procedures. Will work with other members of the design team to transform system designs into working documents using computer aided design (CAD) tools, and ensure that project design, development, and implementation are completed in a timely manner. 

Other activities include researching, collecting, and preparing reports containing information on materials properties, integrity, and abilities of Company's products and competing equipment. Will generate BoS product designs, make improvements to existing product designs, evaluate commercially available products, parts, or processes for cost efficiency and reliability, and participate in the development of labor reduction efforts. 

The Mechanical Design Engineer will have primary responsibility for all technical issues related to materials and component properties and mechanical specifications for project system designs and implementation procedures. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned. 

* Lead the development of BoS component and product designs to support First Solar modules
* Generate, develop, and document standardized BoS component designs
* Incorporate revisions and modifications to all types of system designs developed and implemented
* Evaluate component supplier and service provider
* Perform product testing and generate performance reports, and document solar system solutions
* Coordinate with "In-Field" team members for the incorporation and joint-development of labor reduction related design improvements, and explore cost and schedule related design improvement opportunities 

Position Qualifications and Experience: 

* BS degree in an engineering or related discipline
* Minimum of two years experience with product development engineering and project or system design
* Engineering experience with materials commonly used in the commercial electrical and general construction industries including glass, aluminum, engineered materials, and alternative building materials.
* Knowledge and familiarity of standard and commonly used materials, components, concepts, practices, and procedures in use within the solar industry or related fields (e.g. electrical industry, construction industry, glass industry, and building materials industry)
* Experience with specifying materials and system component performance requirements
* Ability to follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform variety of complex tasks and the functions of the job while working under limited or general supervision
* Requires a high degree of creativity and latitude, and will draw on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
* Proficiency in MS Office products, AutoCAD, and company specific software programs including Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software
