Description
Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), a national nonprofit headquartered in Portland, Oregon, was established in 1998. As a nonprofit, BEF has a dual mission: encouraging the transition to a sustainable energy future fueled by renewable energy, and supporting innovative, community-based long-term funding approaches to restore damaged watersheds.
BEF is not a typical foundation. Rather than relying on an endowment, the foundation relies on sales of environmental attributes and related services to generate the resources needed to support its mission.
BEF pioneered the sale of renewable energy certificates (RECs) in 2000 and helped establish national standards for certification and trading (now known as the Green-e Energy standard). Through its sales efforts, BEF serves a wide spectrum of customers across North America and offers a number of services within the renewable energy arena.
With the launch of the Green-e Climate standard, BEF added carbon offsets to its sales portfolio from renewable energy generation sources. Other projects include landfill gas methane capture, and agricultural methane capture under a variety of the leading verifications.
Another demonstration of BEF's entrepreneurial spirit is the formation of BEF Renewable Inc., a wholly owned for-profit subsidiary created expressly to utilize tax incentives and develop renewable energy projects. BEF and its subsidiary have taken leading roles in the development of new sources of renewable energy and carbon offset projects, including residential-scale solar projects, large-scale wind farms, and methane capture projects.
