Description

Earthjustice, the nonprofit law firm for the environment, is seeking a Managing Attorney to lead our Washington DC office. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a key role in the nation's largest and most effective non-profit environmental law firm.

The Washington office occupies a unique position within Earthjustice. The office serves both as a regional office for the Washington and mid-Atlantic area and as a national litigation team conducting a wide range of cases of national significance. Because Washington is the nation's capital and the location of a critical mass of the national environmental community, the office also has important responsibilities building and maintaining relationships with other groups and working with the Earthjustice legislative and communications teams.

The Washington office's docket includes litigation to protect public health and the environment from air pollution, nationally and regionally, and to protect existing air pollution regulations from the Bush Administration's attempts to weaken them; to protect streams, wetlands, drinking water supplies, and other waters from pollution and outright destruction and to improve the appallingly poor water quality in and around the nation's capital; to compel the federal government to improve its management and protection of our ocean resources; and to challenge the federal government's practice of allowing mountaintop removal mining. For more information about the office's work, visit http://www.earthjustice.org/regional/washington_dc/.

The ideal candidate for the Managing Attorney position will possess:

* Strategic vision in selecting issues and cases
* Excellent litigation skills, both hands-on and managing litigation by others
* Familiarity with environmental litigation and issues
* Understanding of the relationship of litigation to the roles of executive and legislative branches of the federal government on environmental issues
* Excellent written and oral communications skills and experience working with media
* Fund-raising experience and ability
* Ability to inspire and motivate staff
* Excellent management skills including recruitment, managing performance, and staff development and retention skills
* Ability to represent the Washington office within Earthjustice and to external audiences

Earthjustice offers a competitive salary and an outstanding benefits plan. Interested candidates should email a letter of interest with resume.

Diversity is highly valued.
