Description
~ The Wildlands Conservancy is a private non-profit land trust dedicated to outdoor education, habitat preservation, ecological restoration and providing nature-oriented outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. ~
Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Director of Land Preservation, the Trails & Greenways Manager is responsible for the planning, implementation, and oversight of a comprehensive trails & greenways program that strives to connect natural spaces to each other and people to the outdoors.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions of the Position
- Understand the current state of efforts to establish greenways throughout the Lehigh River watershed and be familiar with the existing major trail networks in the area;
- Work to develop connectivity strategies;
- Be responsible for the planning, implementation, and oversight of trail construction and greenway establishment projects;
- Work closely with the Conservation Department staff to implement appropriate property acquisition options;
- Work closely with other Conservation Department staff to protect and restore the ecological features of trails and greenways;
- Work collaboratively with other Conservancy staff, conservation organizations, landowners, corporations, donors, outside contractors, and government agencies to achieve the organization's conservation goals;
- Promote the organization by being engaged in the local conservation and recreation community and by maintaining strong working relationships with local, state, and federal partners;
- Regularly engage the general public in the organization's conservation work; and
- Implement a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for program priorities.
Qualifcations
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree related to natural resource management, and have 5-10 years of experience in the conservation field;
- Demonstrate expert knowledge of trail and greenway development, and possess knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, natural resource protection and outdoor recreation;
- Have the ability to resolve complex issues independently and experiment to find creative solutions;
- Have financial responsibility that will include working within/managing a budget to control costs, complete projects, negotiate and contract with vendors, develop budgets and projections, and meet revenue targets;
- Be responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs;
- Prepare and present project proposals, including negotiating with federal, state and local agencies to achieve program goals;
- Have superb communication and presentation skills, and have the ability to communicate a compelling and inspired vision, as well as a sense of core purpose to any audience, individually and in groups;
- Have the ability to think strategically, creating competitive and breakthrough strategies and plans;
- Have the ability to cultivate the creative ideas of others, make connections between ideas, and project potential outcomes;
- Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information; and
- Have a valid driver's license and a functioning personal vehicle.
Working Conditions
- Wildlands Conservancy offices are smoke-free.
- The ability to work harmoniously in manifestly friendly - but close - quarters is required.
- Working long and unusual hours, including some evenings and weekends, is common.
- Travel is usually fairly local, rarely requiring overnight stays.
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and abilities.
