Description

The Rodale Institute is seeking a senior scientist to manage and direct its research program. The Institute is located on a 333-acre farm near Kutztown, PA. where research on cropping systems compares organic and conventional methods of production. In addition there is research on cover crops, weed management, human consumable grain and apple production. The research aims to improve organic methods for use by organic farmers and those in conventional agriculture making the transition to organic production. The Institutes research program is primarily devoted to providing input and scientific backstopping for its training and education programs for farmers and extension agents. The Institute also works with farmers and others to develop on-farm research and education programs.

The duties include administration of the staff, management of grants, applying for and writing grants, helping with fund raising, working with the training program people and coordination and communication with Institute management. In addition there will be public speaking with other scientists, extensionists, farmers, policy makers and the general public.

This position requires an excellent scientific background, communication skills, and management abilities. A broad understanding of US agriculture is necessary. A Ph.D. degree is required and strong evidence of a broad interest in organic/regenerative agriculture is required. At least 5 years of experience and grant writing experience is a plus.
