Manager of Online Activism

ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE: 

Environmental Defense's distinctive approach to environmental protection focuses on scientific and economic disciplines and on the use of market mechanisms where applicable to reach pragmatic, durable solutions. The organization builds teams of scientists, lawyers, and economists to investigate the scientific causes of environmental problems as well as the market forces and government policies that can encourage environmental improvement in a broad range of environmental arenas (air and water quality, climate, oceans, species and habitat restoration, and environmental health.) 

Job Description: 

Environmental Defense, a pioneer in online activism, has a large and successful online activism program that uses the Internet to help over 400,000 members and activists take action to protect the environment. Online activity includes 5 to 15 action alerts per month, a monthly newsletter, and support for offline volunteer action. 

We are seeking someone with significant online activism and marketing experience to serve as Manager of Online Activism. This position will work with the Director of Internet Strategy in leading the organization's activism strategy and will be a key part of the larger Marketing and Communications department. 

Responsibilities include: 

* Lead our strategic planning for how to most effectively engage our members in online participation.
* Oversee a busy and dynamic action alert, messaging and newsletter editorial schedule. 
* Coordinate the drafting, editing, and review of action alert and email messaging copy and creative.
* Develop and oversee a testing program to fine-tune tone, content and format to ensure maximum response. 
* Work with organization's programs and publications to ensure that the online activism program is consistent with Environmental Defense's overall goals and message.
* Work with membership and marketing staff to coordinate online fundraising efforts.
* Oversee paid and free viral activist recruitment and email acquisition activities.
* Assist in managing technology tools and vendors to ensure organization is using the best tools to manage our online relationships, and is using these tools most effectively. 
* Advise on analysis of online activism statistics and trends. 

Qualifications include: 

* At least 5 years of strong experience in online activism or other relevant work
* Proven judgment about how to best engage and cultivate a constituency
* Strong writing and editing skills, including command of the best practices in online writing
* Management or project management experience a plus 
* Grassroots activism experience offline a plus
