Technologies may include energy storage, electric vehicles, solar, wind, microgrids, green hydrogen, and multiple-technology projects. Topical areas may include DER policy, rate design, wholesale market design, grid architecture, economic analysis, and capacity expansion modeling.

Client Project Execution (50%)

  • Manage the execution of technical work within the context of overall client project goals.
  • Serve as a technical expert for other Strategen team members to scope and execute client project requests.
  • Develop insights into the economic, technical, and policy implications of various regulatory proposals.
  • Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative market analysis to understand market trends and company-specific information related to the topic areas of retail rate design, wholesale markets, clean energy technologies, etc.
  • Conduct quantitative analysis to understand the economics of different strategies and business models, and the value proposition/economics of clean energy technologies in various retail and wholesale energy markets.
  • Supervise team members and individual contributors on projects, ensuring quality work product is efficiently delivered and coordinated with overall project objectives.

Client Project Development (15%)

  • Assist Strategen team members in scoping and providing clarity on client project requests, which may be ambiguous.
  • Identify key areas of uncertainty with respect to technical work needed to complete client projects.
  • Write technical scopes of work clearly.

Technical Product Development (15%)

  • Conduct quantitative analyses and modeling exercises related to the power system.
  • Aid in the firm’s development of new technical capabilities related to power system modeling.

Thought Leadership (10%)

  • Develop and provide deep insights into how to transform the power system quickly and in an equitable manner.
  • Provide technical expertise and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences related to power system planning and operations, transportation electrification, and/or DER interconnection.

Business Development (10%)

  • Attend conferences and seminars to build relationships with potential clients.
  • Understand and assess opportunities for meeting client needs.
  • Identify potential market gaps that Strategen Consulting could fill.
  • Assist with other Strategen business unit activities (e.g. supporting Strategen conferences and events) as needed.

Experience, Skills and Education:

At Strategen, we understand that a commitment to be the best at your craft ultimately depends on your intrinsic motivation, curiosity, and hustle. We know people are capable of learning on the job and that previous experience and qualifications do not always transfer to new situations. With that being said, the following is a list of preferred qualifications:

  • MS or PhD degree in engineering or other technical field (preferably in electrical engineering, power systems engineering, industrial engineering, mathematics, economics, or a related field).
  • 3-5 years of experience working in the energy and power sector as a quantitative analyst or grid engineer, preferably at the distribution level working on solutions to integrating distribution energy resources.
  • Knowledge of distribution system planning and operations and/or generation resource planning, including experience with distributed energy resources (solar PV, energy storage, electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure, DER interconnection, microgrids).
  • Proficient in high-level programming languages (primarily Python; MATLAB, R, or Java ok), with knowledge of structured programming and programming best practices.
  • Familiarity with power system optimization, including production cost and capacity models.
  • Knowledge of statistics, time-series modeling, convex optimization methods, and commercial solvers (Cplex, Gurobi, GAMS, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including being able to articulate technical topics in writing for a public audience.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
