ELM is a nonprofit educational and advocacy organization, supported by a combination of individual and foundation philanthropy, dues from citizens and organization members, and proceeds from special events.

We focus our resources on the state level, where we believe that our knowledge, expertise and reputation allow us to have the strongest impact. We also network and collaborate with a variety of leaders in business and government as well with other environmental nonprofits to achieve effective results.

Position Overview

ELM is seeking candidates for a Legislative Director to lead our state level advocacy and be a member of a small dynamic team. This is an opportunity to advance key policies that will protect our environment and set us on a path to a clean energy future.

This position will report to the VP for Policy and work closely with our Director of Energy Policy and our ELM Action Fund staff. This is a full-time position located in Boston, MA.

Responsibilities

ELM’s Legislative Director will have primary responsibility for building ELM’s influence at the State House and shaping ELM’s advocacy strategy. This will include:

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key legislators and staff, as well as executive agency officials responsible for environmental and energy issues
  • Developing issue campaign strategy and tactics along with other ELM staff
  • Managing communications with legislators and other government officials
  • Coordinating with allies to advance priority legislation
  • Leading Green Budget coalition and developing our budget priorities and strategy
  • Cultivating and maintaining relationships with the press
  • Leading the development of our legislative scorecard
  • Preparing materials on our legislative priorities and content for social media and website
  • Testifying on select ELM priority legislation
  • Working with ELM Action Fund staff to help elect new pro-environment legislators and defend incumbent environmental champions.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of state-level government relations experience strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of environmental issues
  • Experience working as part of a team and with coalitions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead several projects simultaneously
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to gather information, analyze data, make recommendations and prepare written materials.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in use of social media platforms for advocacy work preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, environmental studies or a related field

Compensation: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
