Position Overview:
Reporting directly to Crane Program Coordinator, and under the general supervision of the Curator of the Freeport McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center, Keeper III will perform daily husbandry duties as they apply to assigned animals.
The primary focus of this position will be on the general husbandry and captive reproduction of endangered Mississippi sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis pulla) and whooping cranes (Grus americana): artificial insemination, egg incubation, MSC chick costume-rearing, handling techniques, and behavioral observations.
During non-breeding season, Keeper III may be asked to work in other animal departments, which includes hoofstock and diet preparation. This is a full-time position with benefits.
Qualifications:
- College degree and 2 years of experience in a recognized or comparable facility, or associate degree and 3 years experience in a recognized or comparable facility.
- Knowledge of and experience working with birds is highly desirable but not critical.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; to work outdoors in extreme heat and/or heavy rain for long periods of time; to work in dimly lit areas with some visual obstruction; to work carefully in costume around very small chicks.
- Willingness and ability to work weekends and holidays, overtime, and to be available based on special needs or circumstances on a 24 hour basis.
