Description

The Adirondack Council, an environmental research and education organization, has internships available year-round in its Albany and Adirondack offices. We will accept graduate students and upper class undergrads in the spring and fall semesters or during the summer. These internships provide opportunities to work in a variety of fields and to learn more about the largest park in the continental United States. We often hire successful interns as full time staff.

Founded in 1975, we have four permanent staff in Albany and a dozen more in our Adirondack headquarters. The Council has 18,000 members and a budget of roughly $1.5 million annually.

National Geographic called the Adirondack Council "one of the two most effective regional environmental organizations in the United States." The other one is the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance -- a great group -- which was, in many ways, modeled after the Adirondack Council.

At our Albany office, spring internships will be available for those interested in public policy (interaction with all levels of government) and public relations (the Council has one of the top media relations operations in the state). Successful candidates will have a chance to work with professional staff, each with more than a decade of experience in their fields. Spring activities include working with the state Legislature and Congress on policy and budget issues. Modest stipends are sometimes available for the spring program. We accept up to three interns in the spring.

Summer is a good time for internships for students with heavy or inflexible class schedules, especially law students. The Council is often called upon to defend state laws that protect the Adirondack Park (i.e., the Forever Wild clause of the State Constitution) and has an active legal team in Albany.

In our Adirondack office, interns can work in the fields of scientific and field research, photography, development/fundraising or state agency oversight.
