Description
Great opportunity for an environmentally concerned graduate level student looking for practical experience in the business arena. Urbanminers, Llc is owned and operated by a graduate from -- of all places --Antioch New England University (2000).
Urbanminers is a for profit company that acts like a social service organization. We have been developing deconstruction and materials reuse in Connecticut for 3 years. What began with a box of rubber bands, bubble gum, duct tape and a 15 year old van has developed to a twelve person team on the payroll and use of considerably more duct tape.
One of our goals is to help create a materials reuse industry in Connecticut on the basis of full building deconstruction. Another is to provide training and job development. We would like to accomplish our goals while having significant positive environmental impact.
Currently we operate a 10,000 sq foot used building materials retail operation, employ an 8 person deconstruction crew and a continuous series of workshops and educational events. Recently we collaborated with other community organizations to provide 2 deconstruction trainings. Currently we are developing contractual arrangements with value added manufacturers for wholesale purchase of building materials. We are also developing some value added operations in-house. One of our current projects includes a 50,000 grant for deconstruction job training and the recovery of materials from up to 20 houses over 2 years.
