International Media Coordinator is a new position in the Membership & Communications Teamat the World Secretariat of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability based in Toronto,Canada.

The Communications sub-team supports the membership, governance, partnerships,advocacy, operations, fundraising, programs and services functions of ICLEI worldwide. Theposition is suited for dynamic professionals who want to develop the job and grow with it.

ICLEI is a worldwide association of local governments dedicated to implementing sustainabledevelopment. It is governed by its over 470 member metropolitan regions, cities, towns, countiesand municipal associations in 67 countries. ICLEI runs campaigns and programs, providesinformation, training and advice to local governments, and carries out advocacy vis--visgovernments and UN organizations. The ICLEI World Secretariat is located in Toronto, Canada.

ICLEI maintains regional and country offices for Africa, Europe, Latin America, South Asia,Southeast Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Korea and the USA, as well as projectoffices in China and Indonesia. It has 135 staff worldwide.

ICLEI functions as an association of local governments, a movement of cities towards sustainability, and an environmental and sustainable development agency for local governments.

Position

Availability: Available from 1 November 2005 and confirmed until 30 April 2005; extension on a full-time or part-time basis is envisaged subject to funding available.

Salary: Negotiable and dependent on agreed tasks and responsibilities according to skills, expertise and experience.

Member of the Membership & Communications Team, which includes six staff positions. Sharing tasks and responsibilities with the Projects Administrator and Web Coordinator in a way to be agreed.

The position is partly based on core funding and must increasingly get covered through project funding, which the incumbent is expected to raise.

Tasks and Responsibilities

General

Public Relations:spokesperson for the organization vis--vis public media

Corporate Design: (corporate communication in the broader sense is dealt with by the SG Office) - guardian of ICLEI's corporate design

Website editing: Chief editor of ICLEI's international website; as such:

- serve as editor of ICLEI's global web pages
- oversee the quality and topicality of ICLEI's regional/country web pages
- instigate update/correction/improvement as required
- help regional secretariats and country offices without own writing/editing capacity maintaining their website
- further conceptual design of website expansions
- work with Web Coordinator to introduce new user-friendly features

Media communications

- secure media coverage of ICLEI's activities
- build and maintain a media contacts database
- produce media releases on ICLEI's work

Publication series

- maintain and further develop ICLEI's publications series
- produce Triennial Report to be distributed at the ICLEI World Congress every three years(2006, 2009 and so on)
- develop concept
- coordinate of input from all offices
- write and edit
- oversee layout and printing
- coordinate dissemination
- produce annual INITIATIVES reportas above
- edit and produce series of "ICLEI Papers" (articles, research papers, etc.):identify material;instigate production of, and edit document to become a, publishable "Paper"

Project Development and Fundraising: creatively identify project funding opportunities, develop projects in the above areas and raise funds with the aim of delivering a maximum of activities in the framework of funded projects

Leadership and Management:if assigned, serve as Team Leader of the Membership & Communications Team; this role will be assigned on a temporary basis, possibly rotating among team members; team leadership includes line manager functions, staff capacity management etc.

Immediate projects

Corporate Design

- review and further develop corporate design principles and elements
- engage professional designer
- conduct consultation process with all offices
- produce CD section for Corporate Communication Manual Montral Summit 2005; Fourth Municipal Leaders Summit on Climate Change, Montral, 5-7 December 2005
- in close cooperation with the media unit of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, media work leading up to, and during, the event:media releases;targeted articles to selected media;brokering interviews with Mayors and ICLEI representatives;produce and publish reports on the event World Congress 2006; ICLEI World Congress 2006, Cape Town, South Africa, 27 February - 3 March 2006
- Produce and publish report on the event: 15-years ICLEI / 2003-2005 Triennial Report
- produce Triennial Report to be distributed at the World Congress 2006, at the same time designed as report on "15 years ICLEI"
- produce updated corporate publications series (two-pagers) on various aspects of the organization

Qualifications required

- at least five years professional experience in the media / publications /PR sector; thereof at least two years experience as PR/press/media officer of a organization and two years experience with the production of periodical and singular publications; experience with corporate presentations (exhibition stands, slide shows etc.)

- creative, entrepreneurial approach to addressing needs and putting ideas into practice

- proven and successful experience in raising funds for projects, identifying funding sources and preparing project proposals, and managing projects

- commitment to sustainable development issues and ICLEI's mission

-excellent journalistic and technical writing in English and French; ability to express complex issues in plain, translatable language that is understandable to an international audience

- trained editor

- fluency in English and French, spoken and written; reading, writing in and understanding of spoken Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, or Korean would be of advantage

- bright mind, quick learning ability

- comfortable in public speech

- proven intercultural sensitivity

- ability to work in a team, guide and supervise colleagues

- excellent communication skills and professional manner

- organized working style applying systems, organizing skills
