Position Overview:

The purpose of this position is to develop and calibrate the powertrain control systems for a variety of hybrid vehicles.  Series and parallel hybrid architectures of electric, hydraulic and mechanical configurations are included.  This is a key position within Navistar's Hybrid Powertrain Center of Excellence.  The successful candidate will develop powertrain calibrations to meet fuel economy and performance goals.  Validation plans will be created and tracked.  Calibrations will be released into production.  Coordination of Engine Engineering, Powertrain Engineering, and Truck Engineering is required.

  • The successful candidate must be proficient in the use of calibration tools and systems, most notably ETAS INCA
  • Experience in the powertrain environment and powertrain integration especially Hybrid Electric and Electric Vehicle applications
  • This individual must have a clear understanding of the principles of diesel engine operating principles, vehicle propulsion and performance, and hybrid powertrain technology
  • The ability to evaluate and balance the energy flows from all systems is of paramount importance
  • The successful candidate will create and implement test plans

Calibration activities are required in a number of environments:

  • Simulation (model-in-the-loop)
  • Powertrain dynamometer
  • Vehicles on closed test tracks
  • Vehicles on public roads

Responsibilities:

The position will require monitoring of technical and business publications for advances hybrid control methodology.   

The successful candidate will also be required to:

  • Make significant technical contributions to various concurrent projects and programs
  • Perform full range of related assignments requiring creative application of advanced principles
  • Provides technical leadership and development to other professionals
  • Provides creative solutions to major problems associated with projects
  • Organize and facilitate ad-hoc technical teams to solve specific technical problems
  • Manages customer/supplier interfaces within context of technical problem solving efforts
  • A commercial driver's license is desirable
  • Project planning and tracking documents will be created
  • Validation plans will be created, initiated, and tracked to completion
  • The candidate must be capable of effective communication across all levels of management, and proficient in the preparation and delivery of results in technical reports and presentations
  • The successful candidate will be resourceful, have strong attention to detail, and excellent interaction skills and capable of working across functional divides (including purchasing, manufacturing and engineering)
  • They will have the drive and flexibility necessary to work in a rapidly developing technical environment

Areas of specialty:

  • Engine and hybrid powertrain calibration and control
  • Vehicle performance and fuel economy testing
  • Data acquisition techniques

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Technology; orAssociate's Degree in Engineering or Technology with 10 years of engineering product development experience in an automotive/truck environment
  • At least 5 years project management experience in engineering product development
  • At least 4 years experience leading others in engineer/design activities
  • At least 7 years experience in automotive product development in one or more component areas (i.e. Interiors, Body-in-White, Powertrain, Brakes, Hardware/Software, etc.)

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to travel 30%
  • At least 5 years automotive industry experience in research and development, with emphasis on advanced energy storage systems for electric and hybrid vehicle applications
