The American Jewish Committee (AJC), a global Jewish advocacy organization, is pursuing LEED-EB certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a rating system developed to increase building efficiency, sustainability, and environmental standards. The American Jewish Committee wishes to become the first Jewish non-profit organization with LEED-EB certification. 

The LEED-EB rating system requires that buildings maximize operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts. This system provides AJC with effective benchmarks for measuring upgrades, improvements, and maintenance over the life of a building.  The AJC has already instituted numerous green programs and initiatives including, but not limited to a recycling program, lighting reduction, green cleaning policies, purchasing renewable energy credits, and a green purchasing program. 

Position Overview:

The Green Building Intern will work as part of the AJC LEED Project Team in preparing the AJC headquarters building for LEED submission. 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include:

  • Completing LEED certification documentation
  • Adhering to policies that specify green building practices in areas such as operation and maintenance, indoor air quality, recycling, cleaning, etc.
  • Tracking performance data, recording usage, and collecting supporting documentation
  • Implementing low cost practices that reduce building energy and operating costs
  • Regularly attend LEED Project Team meetings
  • The Intern will work closely with and report to the Green Building Project Coordinator

Other responsibilities will include:

  • identifying green products and assist with other credit and prerequisite requirements as needed

This is a time limited commitment of 3-6 months and a minimum of 3 days per week.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degree or work experience in a related environmental field
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills
  • Excellent internet research skills
  • An organized self starter
  • Knowledge of Physics and Chemistry helpful
  • Math and use of Microsoft Excel required
  • Engineering knowledge a plus
  • LEED-AP or GA accreditation a plus
