The American Jewish Committee, a New York City advocacy organization for human and civil rights, is pursuing LEED-EB certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a rating system developed to increase building efficiency, sustainability and environmental standards. The American Jewish Committee wishes to become
the first Jewish non-profit organization with LEED-EB certification. The Green Building Council is using innovative strategies to support environmental preservation initiatives. Be part of a growing number of organizations learning the latest ways to save energy, improve building performance, reduce air pollutionand increase occupant safety and satisfaction.
Position Overview:
The intern will work as part of a team to identify low cost improvements that reduce energy and operating costs of our building. This is a time limited commitment of 4-6 months and a minimum of 3 days per week.
Responsibilities:
- collect data, provide records and write plans as part of obtaining various Green Building credits toward certification.
- Specification standards will need to be researched and developed for purchasing of materials for use in the building. This work will also include tracking progress of improvements and taking before and after pictures of upgrades.
- assist in finding products that are certified green and monitor our usage.
- assist in developing an educational video or PowerPoint presentation on the green certification process.
- attend Green Building meetings at AJC.
- coordinate and enhance the organization's recycling program and purchasing policies.
Qualifications:
- Interest in environmental issues
- Excellent writing and speaking skills
- Ability to conduct research using the Internet
- Must be a self starter
- Knowledge of Physics and Chemistry helpful
- Some math required
- Engineering knowledge a plus
- LEED-AP very helpful
