Description
Washington Trout, a private non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the preservation, protection, and restoration of Washington's native fish ecosystems, is currently hiring for a GIS and IT position.
Job Requirements:
This position requires competency in GIS analysis and cartography and the ability to provide a diverse set of GIS techniques related to ecological studies. The position also includes IT duties for a network of about 15 workstations and laptops, and a server. Additionally, the candidate will provide technology support in various degrees to facilitate field efforts.
A familiarity with GPS, Total Station, digital cameras, etc. and how to import and use these data is required. The successful candidate will possess the ability to manage multiple projects and communicate any issues or conflicts regarding time demands and constraints. The candidate must be able to work unsupervised and independently. An understanding of basic ecological and biological principles is preferred.
Washington Trout will be updating network infrastructure including new file and web hosting servers, which will provide the successful candidate the opportunity for significant input and oversight in this process.
Job Overview:
Typical GIS tasks: Data needs assessment, data acquisitions, data preparation, data analysis, cartography, and presentation deliverables. We have a license for ArcGIS at the ArcInfo (8.2) level. Importing Trimble GPS and survey data and working with this data to append to existing GIS features is a necessary skill. HTML skills are needed, and Java scripting is employed for an interactive web GIS.
IT tasks include: Network administration for an NT server, backup, troubleshooting, maintenance and support for ten desktops, and several remote laptops. Other office hardware includes printers, fax, copier, and DSL line. Candidate is also responsible for managing and maintaining off-site Internet hosting for FTP, website and e-mail.
Qualifications:
- At least a Bachelor's degree in geography, computer science, fisheries science, or other ecological/biological sciences
- Master's degree preferred
- 2 years of experience using GIS in support of natural resource science and/or managing network infrastructure will substitute for a Master's degree
- A basic understanding of the ecology of aquatic ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest
Compensation:
Salary is commensurate with experience and includes basic medical, paid vacation, sick leave and holidays.
