Position Overview 

We have an amazing job opportunity for the right individual to be the General Manager in a local profitable grocery store in a small town in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California.

The General Manager position is responsible for managing and developing all aspects of the enterprise including staff motivation, sales growth, margin, new item introduction, labor and inventory control, merchandising, and event planning.   

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversees all employees in creating positive customer experiences and delivering superior customer service.
  • Overall management responsibility for operation of retail grocery store, including sales and profit performance, control of cash, budget, inventory/security and customer services.
  • Track, analyze and implementation of store performance by forecasting of weekly/quarterly sales and meeting or exceeding established goals. Communicate sales goals, department performance and sales opportunities.
  • Manage product display and appearance.  Oversee that pricing and signage are accurate and appealing.
  • Manage cashier accountability, scanning accuracy and adherence to company security and cash control procedures.
  • Develop and build relationships with all vendors to evoke maximum support and highest standards.
  • Ensure that compliance with all federal, state, local agency, company policies and procedures are properly followed, including, security, safety, food handling and sanitation, weights and measures, refrigeration, wage and hour, etc. 
  • Recruit, properly train, coach/develop, encourage and set high standards for job performance of store employees, with assistance of other management personnel. Evaluate employee performance and addresses conduct issues through coaching, counseling and termination process, if needed.
  • Oversees the Grocery Department staff including hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and initiating required performance reviews.  
  • Ensures that product for upcoming ads and promotions are ordered in a timely matter, in stock, and available for processing.
  • Ensures tag and pricing accuracy.
  • Monitors the rotation of all grocery products paying particular attention to expired stock and discarding outdated or spoiled items.
  • Ensure appropriate inventory levels to maximize sales, inventory turns and return on investment. 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years retail grocery management experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in a natural foods industry is a plus.
  • Overall management responsibility for a minimum of 40 personnel or greater.
  • Strong operations experience in receiving, stock and inventory as well as front-end management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in selecting, assessing, developing and coaching employees.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks in a very fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills with an upbeat demeanor and sales-oriented personality.
  • Must have the capacity to take initiative when problems arise.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem solving and decision making skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to adapt in a variety of situations.
  • Must have knowledge with MS Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates.
  • Must be familiar with Health Department guidelines and regulations as they pertain to a grocery retail environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to analyze and interpret Company financial statements and results.
  • The ability to deliver and train others to deliver outstanding customer service.
  • Plan and execute store design, promotions, and special events.
  • Possess an “owner mentality.”

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • The potential for prolonged standing, walking, squatting and/or bending.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have the ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and use box cutters.
  • Ability to enter the cold case, cooler, and freezer thereby being subjected to cold temperatures for extended periods of time.

Compensation: The General Manager position is a non-union, salaried position and reports to the store owner.
