25 internships remain with our national award winning Fire Education Corps. Positions vary and begin soon! Locations vary throughout the U.S. and are determined through a match of specific site needs and intern preferences. (Remaining placements are located in the following states: AZ, ID, IN, MN, NM, VA, WA, and WI.)
Duties:
The primary goal of the SCA National Fire Education Corps is to work towards arming communities with the tools they need to live in areas at high risk to devastating wildland fires. These teams work in local communities to educate homeowners on how they can protect their homes from wildfire. Teams will raise public wildfire awareness through public events and community presentations, home evaluations, canvassing, fuels reduction projects and extensive GIS/GPS mapping of homes, waterways and communities.

3-Month Team Member Positions (FEC2-1) 12 weeks: 6/18 - 9/18/03
Interns will participate in Field-Season phase of a community wildland fire education project. These positions are dual in focus on community outreach activities and a special project. Outreach activities include attending events and community meetings, youth-education days, fuels-reduction projects, media spots, canvassing, and conducting local home risk evaluations.
Special projects may include (but are not limited to) the following concentrations: communications and/or media relations, GIS, local and native plant education, curriculum development, and public relations.
Special projects are developed and completed by the intern with guidance from their on-site team leader and agency-coordinator. Week one is spent training in Boise, ID, the location of the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Post-training sites include communities in most of the western states and site placement is determined through the matching of specific site needs and intern preferences.
Duties: community outreach, 70%; special project, 15%; data analysis, 5%; team-building and contribution to positive team living and working environment, 10%.
Require:
US Citizenship, valid driver's license, minimum current CPR and standard first aid certification (training available), ability to drive a 4WD vehicle (or willingness to learn), desire to work with people of various backgrounds, excellent organizational skills, excellent communication skills, ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team, experience living and working in a group environment, and ability or willingness to learn to use various equipment and tools.
Desire:
interest and/or experience in one or more of the following; community politics, agency relations, GIS and basic computer programs, fire behavior, communications and media relations experience.
