Leading Fair Trade non-profit seeks a skilled Financial/Accounting professional for a half-time position.

TransFair USA provides the only certification for Fair Trade products in the US, improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of farmers and their communities. Duties:
Under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, the Controller directs the financial affairs of the organization and prepares financial analyses of operations, including financial statements with supporting schedules for the guidance of management and Board reporting.

The Controller is responsible for the organization's financial plans and policies, its accounting practices, the conduct of its relationships with lending institutions and the financial community, the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of financial reports.

The position involves supervision over general accounting, property accounting, internal auditing, fund accounting, and budgetary controls.

  • Establishes major economic objectives and policies for the organization and prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports that outline the organization's financial position in the areas of income, expenses, and earnings.
  • Coordinates and directs the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, institutes and maintains other planning and control procedures, and analyzes and reports variances.
  • Development, analysis, and interpretation of statistical and accounting information in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.
  • Responsible for evaluating the performance of the accounting staff and making recommendations to executive management.
  • Maintains the system of accounts and record keeping on all organization transactions and assets.
  • Responsible for tax planning and compliance with all federal, state, and local applicable taxes.
  • Furnishes, edits and updates internal and external reports.
  • Determines depreciation rates on capitalized items and advises management on desirable operational adjustments.
  • Evaluates and recommends insurance coverage for property and potential liabilities.
  • The Controller has the final responsibility for providing effective financial controls for the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Prefer a minimum of five years experience in non profit financial management.
  • Experience providing financial support to executive management, Boards or other governing entities.
  • BA/BS Degree in Accounting, Finance or related major required;
  • CPA certification preferred.
  • Excellent computer and communications skills required.
  • Currently offered as a half-time position; other arrangements are possible depending upon qualifications, experience and interests.

Salary: DOE plus benefits.
