Finance Director

Since 1991, the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) has carried out 75 projects strengthening communities in 23 countries. The organization has an annual budget of $12M and 85 staff in 7 offices.   

In 2007, ISC launched a Climate and Environment Program to help hundreds of communities in the US and China- which together are responsible for 40% of the world's total green house gas emissions -- transition to a low-carbon economy and become more resilient to climate impacts.  ISC has a major program in China and a rapidly growing initiative in the US.  We build the capacity of communities and institutions - including governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations - to develop and implement effective climate solutions through intensive training, technical assistance and peer-learning services.

Position Overview:

The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) is seeking a Finance Director to develop and maintain high quality and efficient financial management systems that ensure financial compliance and accountability maximize the return on unrestricted funds, minimize risk to the organization and facilitate financial planning.

The Director of Finance oversees budgeting, accounting and financial reporting systems. Supervises the annual financial audit and internal reviews, and provides orientation, training and advice to financial and program staff in eight international offices. 

The position requires international travel.  Highly skilled and motivated individuals with less experience are encouraged to apply, but, if selected, the job title and some responsibilities may be adjusted. 

Responsibilities:

• Establishes policies and practices for and administers the accounting and financial management systems and standards of the organization.
• Provides financial and accounting support to program managers and field offices.
• Oversees preparation and monitoring of budget.
• Supervises the annual financial audit and internal controls and reviews.
• Manages program grant, donor and contract compliance.
• Reports, measures and interprets the results of financial operations.
• Compares performance against budgets and prepares appropriate analyses of the organization's financial position.
• Directs cash management systems.
• Coordinates with other staff on procurement, IT, and other office facilities and services.
• Supervises, trains, advises and reviews headquarters and field office accounting staff.

Qualifications:

• Minimum bachelor's degree but CPA, MBA, or MPA strongly preferred.
• 7-10 years in senior-level accounting and financial management position, preferably in a nonprofit international assistance context.
• Excellent manager with strong leadership potential. 
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, A-133 and other federal cost principles and regulations.
• Experience in planning and supervising fiscal processes including budgeting, financial management and analysis.
• Experience with automated accounting systems such as Blackbaud, as well as facility with QuickBooks, Excel and Windows.
• Experience with business processes automation and improvement, including web-based tools.
• Demonstrated experience and success working both independently and in a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• Willingness to perform all levels of accounting functions.
• Familiarity with multi-currency accounting/international operations
• Ability to travel. 
• Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to ISC's mission.
