Position Overview

The Field Engineer is a technical installation and design professional and will be responsible for performing detailing and field engineering services for electrical construction projects. Types of projects include commercial building and industrial projects, distributed generation (DG) and utility scale PV solar plants, other renewable energy plants, and substations and high voltage distribution/transmission projects.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong technical background, the ability to effectively communicate detailed elements, and the ability to schedule and manage resources. The Field Engineer is effective at communicating with internal and external clients in both an office and field environment.

Responsibilities

  • Review project scope and design specifications and participate in design kickoff meetings.
  • Utilize engineered drawings, specifications, design criteria and vendor shop drawings to develop a detailed installation plan including supplemental installation drawing details and bills of material (BOMs) for all conductors, equipment, devices and support infrastructure.
  • Work with engineer of record and recommend value engineering ideas for consideration.
  • Work with CAD specialist to create detailed drawings for installation teams.
  • Detail BOMs for electrical loose material, simple and complex electrical assemblies and electrical sub-assemblies for the Manufacturing Department.
  • Report back on innovative ideas for product improvement and new product creation ideas throughout the design for installation and the field installation processes.
  • Coordinate best methods of installation with field installation crews.
  • Act as a technical advisor on the project job site during installation.
  • Participate in developing project construction schedule.
  • Monitor and record equipment and labor productivity for on-site installation and excavation activities
  • Update 6 week look ahead short interval schedule (SIS) on a weekly basis including product delivery dates and sequence of work activities.
  • Coordinate activities with owners, general contractors and/or other subcontractors on job site.
  • Identify and report change requests to the project management team, prepare takeoffs for change request material, assist with change request material and labor estimates, review change request scope with electrical installation contractor, oversee on-site implementation of change requests.
  • Working in construction environments including building construction, industrial plants, and substations 12kV through 230kV.
  • Interpret schematic, wiring and control drawings and provide technical support to installation electricians.
  • Understanding and ensuring testing requirement are met per procedures for: substations, solar arrays, and building electrical systems.
  • Travel to project job site (up to 70% working time away from office).

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years' on the job installation experience on electrical construction projects.
  • Design and/or engineering experience in electrical power and/or distribution systems a major plus but not required.
  • Thorough understanding of electrical materials, means and construction methods.
  • Strong skills in reading control drawings such as schematic, point to point wiring and other vendor shop drawings.
  • Journeyman Electrician certification in CA or other state.
  • Installation experience on medium and high voltage distribution systems or renewable energy projects highly preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy projects gained either through a trade education or engineering degree highly preferred but not required.
  • Experience with NETA testing standards and guidelines.
  • Experience working for a design/build electrical contractor a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite with special emphasis on Excel, Word and Outlook.
