Description

The Michigan Environmental Council is seeking a strategic minded individual with strong campaign leadership skills to coordinate grassroots organizing to build power and advance environmental protection in Michigan.

Founded in 1980, the nonprofit MEC now represents 67 environmental, public health and faith-based organizations, offering research, communications and technical support and providing an effective voice for the environment at the local, state and federal levels.

Working with our member groups and their collective membership of more than 200,000 residents, MEC is fighting to protect our land resources from sprawl, guard our water, defend childrens health from pollution, promote cleaner energy for a stronger economy, and open up the environmental decision-making processes of government.

Duties:
This person will work under the supervision of the Michigan Environmental Councils Policy Director to implement the directives of a Project Management Committee, consisting of senior staff that represent some of Michigans leading environmental organizations.

  • Develop and implement coalition-building and organizing strategies designed to expand our base of supporters and increase their engagement with legislative, administrative, public policy and public education initiatives.
  • In collaboration with environmental and community organizations, and working closely with local organizers, develop and direct specific plans for organizing projects in selected Michigan media markets with clear goals, detailed follow through and record keeping of success.
  • Working with the projects Campaign Coordinator, identify and recruit involvement in the project from among the 67 member organizations of the Michigan Environmental Council, as well as other non traditional partners.
  • Provide guidance, analysis and recommendations to the Project Management Committee to ensure that organizing and other target area activities remain strategically focused to achieve the goals and objectives of the project.
  • Working with the projects Campaign Coordinator, evaluate on a continuing basis the technical resources and other tools needed to accomplish the projects goals and objectives.
  • Prepare and supervise preparation of field written materials, including educational and organizing materials, activist alerts, electronic advocacy materials, and sign-on letters.
  • Secure the support of and maintain communication with organizations and individuals in targeted areas of the state; occasionally travel to provide technical and organizing assistance.
  • Provide strategic support for media and communications tactics developed and implemented by the projects Media Coordinator

Qualifications:

  • At least two years of field organizing and/or campaign experience with legislative and electoral campaigns at the state and/or national level.
  • Strong strategic planning and political targeting skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Good knowledge of media.
  • Staff supervision and database management experience helpful.
  • Ability to travel in-state.
  • Commitment to environmental protection.

Terms:
Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
